An in-depth interview with Jason Gurney about the
birth of entertainment blog tracking site ShowHype, the inner
workings of the site, and how I can potentially rule the world through it (hint – the plan involves underpants).
A prime example of how not to take
feedback and how to hurt an artist’s career.

Has anyone been able to log on in
the morning without seeing a story about Britney Spears?
I think we’ve finally reached the point of not just over saturation when it comes to celebrity sleaze, but dangerous over saturation. Britney is a prime example of this as it’s looking more and more like her media coverage is eventually going to kill her and I don’t just mean career-wise.
After two weeks of covering the best of
2007 we have finally arrived at the top five
albums of the year. Making up the year’s top offerings are a breakthrough artist who works with The Neptunes, a creative British singer with a strange sense of humor, two multi-faceted Hip-Hop artists and a tri-lingual beauty who puts it all together.
This week I caught up with one half
of the Hip-Hop duo Faculty to find out more
about their history, what they mean when they say they look to create “good Hip-Hop music,” and the daily tasks that come with running their label D&H Records. With much respect to all the teachers of the world, this might be the most interesting Faculty meeting in recorded history
Part two of my five part Top 25
of 2007 series features albums 20-16. Included in this
list are a Warped Tour fav, something ambient, an MC exploring his own identity, a pioneering rapper and paralyzing rock group.
Back in the day one hit wonders were
treated as what they were, groups or artists that
had one song in them and nothing more. Since the number of one hit wonders has been growing rapidly in recent years we know there is an issue here, so what can be done to either prevent, or work with, these here today gone tomorrow artists? I have a few ideas.
What do George Michael, John Mellencamp, Geggy Tah
and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones all have in common
(other than being in this sentence)? They’re all featured in this month’s episode of From A to B 90’s Style, everyone’s favorite co-blog by superstar journalists Adam Bernard (hey, that’s me!) and Bear Frazer. Enjoy!
The fourth installment of my Top 25 Albums
of 2007, albums 10-6, includes two famous rockers’ latest
projects, two extremely skillful MCs from opposite sides of the country, and a mash up of epic proportions.
There's an old pro wrestling term for the
folks who believe Lil' Wayne's first week numbers are
real; marks. This post isn't going to be about all the ways I feel those numbers have been falsified, though, rather I'm going to turn my attention to the actual importance of first week sales numbers and why, in the long run, we'd all be better off if we didn't know them.
This past Saturday former Artists of the Week
The Makeout Party held an album release event for
their Spell Check… 1… 2 EP at Lit Lounge in New York City. Already a fan of their music, at the show I learned that when The Makeout Party performs, unless you are incredibly uptight, and by uptight I mean the kind of person who didn’t like Pootie Tang, you have no choice but to have a good time...
2008 is almost here, so it’s time to
run down the best 2007 had to offer. To
handle this task I’ve created a five part series that will cover my Top 25 Albums of 2007. Today I bring you part one, albums 25-21, which includes a band that uses toy instruments, a funky dance duo, a fresh face on the R&B scene and two MCs who want to make you move to socially relevant lyrics.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Ryan O’Neil moved to
Queens, NY in 1994. He became interested in music
while attending LaGuardia High School and when he moved on to college he majored in the subject. This week I caught up with O'Neil to find out why he and 100dbs work so well together, how being a “One Hand Bandit” has affected him in the past, and why you’ll never see him passing out flyers.
With 2008 arriving I wanted to take a
few minutes to make some resolutions for some famous
folks who might not have had the time to make them for themselves. From pregnant teen actresses to rappers to reality TV personalities, here are my Celebrity Resolutions for 2008.
Euphon is the East Harlem, New York, duo
of emcee Mr. Fantastik and emcee/producer Slim. Their name
comes from the word euphonic, which means agreeable sound, especially in the phonetic quality of words. The two felt this was a perfect fit for what they were looking to do - be different musically while still being pleasing to the ear...
In my mind this isn’t a question of
art or porn, but rather an issue of our
perception of imagery, so today I’m asking is there something wrong with the Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair photo, or is there something wrong with the masses of people who when viewing it instantly think of sex?
Although all parties involved are saying the decision
came about mutually and was not a result of
any pressure whatsoever, Nas’ upcoming album has had its title changed from Nigger to Nas. I actually have no problem with this for one very big reason; it had become clear that the album had been named Nigger not to spark any kind of intellectual debate, but rather just to hype an album...
This past Friday my radio show was pre-empted
for college basketball and it actually turned out to
be a blessing in disguise. At first I was disappointed, but then I remembered that my girl Rue Melo was going to be in NYC to perform and I quickly hit up her publicist to get on the list. Once on the list (+1, of course) I called up a buddy of mine that I hadn’t seen in a while and we were ready ...

From opening at shows at a local hotel
to appearances on Showtime at the Apollo and BET's
Coming to the Stage, Jackson has had a metoric rise in the world of stand up comedy. I sat down with him to discuss the ups and downs of being a stand up comic, the first time he saw another comic doing his material, and balancing comedy with family.
The other day I turned on my TV
and saw an ad for Boost Mobile that starred
Jermaine Dupri, Young Jeezy and one of my personal favorite artists, Mickey Avalon. This made me think back to a conversation I had with Mickey earlier in the year. It's an interesting look into the life and work of one of music’s most unique individuals.
