T H E * M U S T * S E E Reprise, from debuting writer/director Joachim Trier, was Norway's submission for Academy foreign-language film consideration back in 2006. Oscar had dozens upon dozens of films to choose from but when they eventually narrowed it down to five nominees, they ignored the two best ones (of those I've seen mind you --haven't seen all 61) Pedro Almodóvar's Volver [prev posts] and this one right here. Argh! Reprise is about two best friends (and ...

Breznican on Oscar benefits Posted by Jeffrey Wells on February 23, 2008 at 07:58 AM "With the pressure to recognize big films declining, the Oscars' role in movies has become more like that of Oprah's Book Club in promoting literature: highlighting the obscure, unusual or unexpected. "'The academy is more concerned with rewarding the best film now than they ever have been. They're less concerned with rewarding popular entertainment," says Sasha Stone , who runs the industry blog AwardsDaily.com . "That trend expands the eternal disconnect between the tastes of the ...

I don’t know if this list is set, or there will be additions, at least for the presenters. I look forward to seeing Jon Stewart host again. I didn’t think he did that bad of a job last time. What pressure!

Rock of Ages

Many people, prior to the show, reminded us that the SAG Awards tends to recognize a large body of work over many years, and so they have, giving Ruby Dee her first SAG award for her supporting role in “American Gangster.” The Bagger chose Amy Ryan for this category, and something tells him his Ellen Page pick in best actress ain’t looking so great right now. Right now, he’s 2-3.
Harvey Weinstein: Resigned to Death, or Hiding?

Amy Ryan has snagged at least five awards in the past four business days (I lost count after the NBR, New York critics, LA critics, DC critics and San Francisco critics) for her work in Ben Affleck’s Gone Baby Gone, and has thus usurped Cate Blanchett as the presumptive frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actress Oscar race. This is, to me, a fairly shocking turn of events, and judging by the noise it’s creating amongst Oscar bloggers, I’m not totally alone in my surprise.

... 2) I'm getting REALLY excited for Sweeney Todd. There's a featurette and some clips now on Awards Daily, and the film looks like it'll be quite good. Not everything will work, I'm sure, but there are a lot of interesting things happening, there's a good visual style, and all the actors seem to be on their game. And despite fears to the contrary, Depp's singing voice is really quite good. He's untrained, yes, but his singing is far from disastrous. He'll be getting many more "WOW, he can sing!" reactions than "ouch, he ruined it" reactions. So ...
