Marc Shaiman's Wild Oscar Moments

By Steve Pond Marc Shaiman, who was announced as musical director for the 82nd Oscar show on Monday morning, has a long and colorful history with the Academy Awards.
He received the first of his five Academy nominations 16 years ago, and was delighted to lose to Bruce Springsteen. Six years later, he was not so happy about losing to Phil Collins.
He ticked off Keith Carradine before one Oscar show, angered Burt Bacharach leading up to another, and cost the Academy tens of thousands of dollars by persuading the show’s producers to hire an entire orchestra they didn’t really want...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Celebrities, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Academy Awards

By Wrap Staff Oscar-nominated composer Marc Shaiman will serve as music director for the 82nd Academy Awards, telecast producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic announced Monday.
“With Marc on board, we are sure to have some great musical and, hopefully, hysterical moments,” Mechanic said in a statement.
“Marc was my inspiration and musical partner on ‘Hairspray’ and he has been responsible for some of the most memorable moments in Oscar history, like Will Ferrell and Jack Black’s comedy numbers,” said Shankman. “He’s a genius!
Good Morning, Oscar: November 23

By Steve Pond In this morning’s roundup of Oscar news ‘n’ notes from around the web, “60 Minutes” showcases “Avatar,” Santa Barbara honors a quartet of actors and that “New Moon” money won’t impress Oscar.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival singles out four Oscar-contending actors for its Cinema Vanguard Award. Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Stanley Tucci and Christoph Waltz will receive their honors on February 12, by which point I expect that two or three of them will be Oscar nominees.
Good Morning, Oscar: November 22

By Steve Pond In this weekend’s roundup of Oscar news ‘n’ notes from around the web, the documentaries cause more controversy and the white noise gets louder and louder.
Anne Thompson and Kris Tapley do their weekly “Oscar Talk,” covering the documentary shortlist, the Governors Awards (Anne loved it!), “Inglourious Basterds” (they both think Weinstein is nuts to campaign Melanie Laurent in the best-actress category) and Hal Holbrook in “That Evening Sun” (they both loved him). (In Contention) (Thompson on Hollywood)

Previewing Oscar's Animated Shorts

By Steve Pond The problem with the Oscar short film categories used to be that it was impossible to see most of the films, so they were just titles on a piece of paper, tie-breakers in Oscar pools that often as not simply revealed who made the best guesses.
Now it’s a lot easier to find information, and even see the films. Most of the 10 films on the newly-announced shortlist for animated shorts, for example, are available online in one form or another.
So here’s a look at what’s in the running for the five slots.

Pixar, Nick Park on Animated Shortlist

By Steve Pond Another day, another Oscar shortlist.
This time it's the animated-short category, where 10 contenders have been chosen out of a field of 37 qualifying shorts. (That's low, by the category's usual standards.)

Pixar, which often competes in this category but hasn't won since 2002, is represented once again by "Partly Cloudy," from director Peter Sohn. The other major play...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Nick Park, Academy Awards

By Steve Pond So much for that “extortion” plot that director James Toback said kept his film “Tyson” off the Oscar shortlist.
In Friday’s New York Times, the director charged that during the voting process for the documentary feature award, he encountered an incident “which I fully put in the category of extortion.” He stood behind his comments in a statement released this morning:

When I said yesterday that the omissions in this year’s documentary shortlist “aren’t going to stir up any grand talk of conspiracies,” I guess I wasn’t taking “Tyson” director James Toback into account.

By Steve Pond Oscar staffers don’t have as much to fear from the show’s new director, Hamish Hamilton, as they originally feared.
Responding to a post in this column that followed the announcement of the British director’s hiring, an Academy spokesperson says that Hamilton will not be bringing a large UK crew to the Oscar show, a fear that some disgruntled staff members had expressed to me.
He will bring his “vision mixer,” a technical-director-type position that doesn’t normally exist in American television, as well as his main associate director. ...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Academy Awards

By Steve Pond The first of three rounds in the documentary-feature judging has been completed, and in narrowing the contenders to 15 the Academy’s documentary screening committees have kicked a few big names out of the race.
Goodbye, Michael More. It’s a TKO, Mike Tyson. You won’t be winning a second Oscar this year, Davis Guggenheim. Your fairy-tale story isn’t getting this particular happy ending, Anvil.

British director has helmed concert shows with Britney Spears and U2, and the MTV awards.
                         >

At 82, the Academy Awards are long overdue for some cosmetic enhancement. And the show's producers have tapped a new director they hope can do the job.

Eye on the Oscars: Preview: 2009 films use far-flung sites to enhance stories -- International locations have played a role in the stories of countless Oscar-winning pics. This year's contenders were shot in environments as far-flung as a shantytown in South Africa for Neill Blomkamp's "District 9" and the sandblasted streets of Amman, Jordan, for Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker."

By Steve Pond The Academy has released the shortlist of 15 documentaries that will move into the next round of competition for the 82nd Academy Awards, and several of the year's highest-profile documentaries are not on the list.
Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story" was not included on the shortlist, which was chosen by the Documentary Branch Screening Committee, volunteers who viewed and scored all the eligible films. Neither was director James Toback's well-received "Tyson," which covered the life of boxer Mike Tyson in his own words.

By Steve Pond Over at Gold Derby, Tom O’Neil loves making bold pronouncements about the Oscar race. Lives for it, in fact. He has fun with the game, and more power to him.
His latest bold pronouncement, in which he explained why “Inglourious Basterds” would win the Oscar for best picture, has been stirring up lots of talk in Oscar-blogging circles, where we all love to sit around and talk about what each other is saying.
And his theory does bear a little examination (and a little disputation), since he’s predicting that Quentin Tarantino will sail to victory based ...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds, Academy Awards

British Invasion Worries Oscar Staffers

By Steve Pond The selection of Hamish Hamilton to direct the 82nd Academy Awards was met with jubilation by many hoping for a more up-to-date Oscars, one that will be more entertaining and lure in more viewers.
Among people who work on the show, though, the reaction was considerably more measured -- and coupled with a very real fear that in these economic times, giving key Oscar jobs to a British director and his team is not a message the Academy should be sending.
“There’s a lot of animosity right now,” said one veteran crew member who expects to work on this Oscar show a...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Academy Awards, The Invasion

By Josh L. Dickey The Oscars want their MTV.
Hamish Hamilton has been named director of the 81st Annual Academy Awards, a sign that first-time producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman may push the Oscars further into the musical performance-heavy territory that the telecast found critical and ratings traction with last time around.
The 43-year-old Brit has steered the stylish and freewheeling MTV Video Music Awards going back to 2006, and this year helmed “Neil Diamond: Hot August Night/NYC” and “Be the Change Inaugural Ball.”

I’m with them on some of their faves (Viggo Mortensen in “The Road,” Ben Foster and Samantha Morton in “The Messenger” … ), but the gallery leaves me with a few questions.

By Steve Pond Sunday afternoon should have been the time when we got a good idea about whether Wes Anderson's "Fantastic Mr. Fox" had enough Academy support to win one of the (presumed) five slots in the best animated feature race.
The film, after all, screened at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater that afternoon -- and the amount of applause at members screenings at the Goldwyn is often a good judge of how eagerly Oscar voters embrace the movies they see there.
The Academy, though, hates it when the media gets reports from members who've attended these screenings -- and in Ande...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Wes Anderson, Academy Awards, The Fantastic Mr. Fox

By Steve Pond Following the lead of the Oscars, the Golden Globes have recognized the strong year in animation by expanding the number of nominees in their "best animated feature" category to five.
A new rule from the Hollywood Foreign Press specifies that the category will have five nominees any time more than 12 films qualify and three nominees if between eight and 11 films qualify; if fewer than eight films are eligible, the award will not be handed out.
In this year's Oscar competition, 20 films qualified for consideration.

So far this season, I want nothing more than for Bridges to win an overdue Oscar for his stunning work in “Crazy Heart.” And I think it'll happen. ...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Jeff Bridges, Kate Hudson, Morning Glory, Academy Awards

Eye on the Oscars: Music Preview: Alt songwriters are cheaper, have emo resonance -- For years it was common for studios to cross-market a film with a well known performer, but today niche artists are landing more tracks in films and reaping the spoils, especially around award season.

Eye on the Oscars: Music Preview: Veteran composer returns for Soderbergh film -- Marvin Hamlish -- the '70s wunderkind who won Oscars for "The Way We Were" and "The Sting" and went on to conquer Broadway with "A Chorus Line" -- is back. And his music for "The Informant" is possibly the most eyebrow-raising score of the year.
