"Four Christmases" Wins Weekend, "Australia" In 5th

LOS ANGELES — Thanksgiving weekend movie crowds gobbled up the Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn holiday comedy "Four Christmases," which debuted at No. 1 with $31.7 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Warner Bros. release, featuring Witherspoon and Vaughn as a couple suffering through four separate family holiday gatherings, raised its total to $46.7 million since opening Wednesday to get a head start on the long weekend. In terms of revenue, it was Hollywood's second-biggest Thanksgiving period ever. The top 12 movies took in $223.7 million from Wednesday to Sunday, trailing only the $232.2 million haul over Thanksgiving in 2000. Summit Entertainment's vampire romance "Twilight," which had a huge No. 1 opening the previous weekend, took a steep 62 percent decline from its $69.6 million debut and was neck-and-neck for second place with Disney's animated family flick "Bolt." Let those without a heart beating in their breasts give Australia less than four stars. Those who boo kids at Easter Egg hunts, yell at referees at junior hockey games, sneer at sunrises, cut in line in front of little old ladies, give out healthy snacks at Halloween, talk during the Star Spangled Banner... they will laugh and slang at Australia . A pox on them. They prove that they are not really members of the human race. For if you have a heart, if your thick cynicism barely covers a romantic soul a mile wide, if you teared up at the last scene in In America , if John Wayne in the doorway at the end of The Searchers made you feel something somewhere in you, if you have a pulse, you will love Australia . I have looked at the reviews: two stars, two and a half stars, I did not read them. I walked into the movie uninfluenced by words, but worried by the lack of eight down in today's New York Times crossword puzzle: critical acclaim. Biased? Perhaps, I love Baz Luhrmann's movies, ...

Moviegoers proved they were thankful for Reese Witherspoon this Thanksgiving weekend. Her comedy Four Christmases (co-starring Vince Vaughn ) claimed the top box office slot, earning an estimated $46.7 million in five days and $31.7 million for the three-day weekend, Variety reports. See Reese Witherspoon and more stars who are having winter movie romances! Twilight ($39.5 million in five days) and the 3-D toon Bolt ($36 million in five days) came in No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The James Bond thriller Quantum of Solace took the fourth slot, with an estimated $28.1 for the five days. The Nicole Kidman-Hugh Jackman epic romance Australia grossed an estimated $20 million in five days, and $14.8 million for the three-day weekend.

Baz Luhrmann's continent-size epic, "Australia," isn't the greatest story ever -- it's several dozen of the greatest stories ever told, "The African Queen," "Gone With the Wind" and "Once Upon a Time in the West" included. A pastiche of genres and references wrapped up -- though, more often than not, whipped up -- into one demented and generally diverting horse-galloping, cattle-stampeding, camera-swooping, music-swelling, mood-altering widescreen package, this creation story about modern Australia is a testament to movie love at its most devout, cinematic spectacle at its most extreme, and kitsch as an act of aesthetic communion. Mr. Luhrmann's use of culturally degraded forms both here and in earlier films like "Moulin Rouge" doesn't register as either a conceptual strategy or a cynical commercial ploy or some combination of the two, as it can with art world jesters like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, who have appropriated kitsch as a (more or less) legitimate postmodern strategy.
