Quantum Of Solace spoilers... For the record, I did see Quantum Of Solace yesterday. Quick verdict - terrific acting, a fine, complicated storyline, and fantastically choreographed action with real stunts and real production values. Of course, thanks to the editing, which resembled Chris Nolan and Paul Greengrass cutting while intoxicated, the action was completely incomprehensible and impossible to enjoy. Which would have been ok had the film not been at least 60% pure action. As for that story, I liked that it resembled acts 4 and 5 of the long story begun in Casino Royale (if it were a play, Casino Royale would be the longer act one and Quantum Of Solace would have been the shorter act two). Had the sequel looked and felt even remotely similar, the two films would have made a wonderful long form story of the shaping of James Bond. Still, it was a pretty good James Bond film on its own merits and it gives a genuine sense of progression to the James Bond character. Overall, a ...

But the real point of comparison, as I predicted two years ago, is that of the Bourne series (I'm not saying I'm a genius, I just did the math right). The Batman comparison only works if you factor in the whole 5-day opening of Batman Begins (and by that rationale, the uptick between Pirates 1 and Pirates 2 fits like a glove too). Both of those respective sequels basically tripled the three-day opening weekend grosses of their respective originals. If you deal with Casino Royale as a 'first in the series', then the comparison fits perfectly and James Bond and Jason Bourne are now identical in box office performance, as well as (allegedly) thematic presentation. Things are looking good for the 22nd installment of the James Bond franchise Quantum of Solace , the second with Daniel Craig as Agent 007, to have the biggest opening for a Bond movie ever. Box Office Mojo and other sources, have the action thriller grossing an estimated $27 million in its opening Friday, which is greater than half the opening of the biggest opening Bond movie to date, 2003's Die Another Day . It can be projected that it will gross roughly $70 to 73 million based on that opening, which would also make it the fourth highest opening for the month of November.

The new James Bond film, "Quantum of Solace," opens nationwide today and review are mixed but positive, if not glowing. No one denies the action or beautiful scenery. The NY Post gave Quantum of Solace 3 stars and called it "The Bond Ultimatum" for its Bourne similarities: REVENGE is a dish best served with bullets, high explosives and giant rolling flameballs. In "Quantum of Solace," James Bond orders the revenge buffet, deluxe. We begin just after "Casino Royale," with Bond's girlfriend Vesper dead and her (other, missing) boyfriend suspected in forcing the events that led to her death, which was perhaps the first suicide by drowning in an elevator yet recorded on-screen. With Vesper gone, the only woman around who understands Bond (a well-scuffed Daniel Craig) is Judi Dench's M, and the way these two hurl flameball glances at each other re-creates the kind of raw sexual tension unseen since the early days of the Siskel and Ebert show. The new Bond movie, out today, is good. Not quite Casino Royale good, but still good: tons of great action scenes, and more of Daniel Craig's glowering young 007, an anti-playboy who kicks ass and seduces women with ruthless efficiency. ("I can't find the stationary," he says--and, whoops, she's in bed with him.) This second Craig installment in the refreshed franchise couldn't care less about weapons of mass destruction. It's all about controlling resources--namely, water and oil. Oil is the new gold, and the scene in which the corpse of a beautiful, naked woman is found on a hotel bed, embalmed in oil, is an obvious allusion to Goldfinger . (Thankfully, there's no villain named Oilfinger. That would just be gross.) In a scene in the foreign ministry, the film takes a moment to basically blurt out that the West's thirst for petroleum prevents it from taking the morally correct course abroad--the consequence being that Bond (once again) has to go rogue for awhile to do the right thing.
