LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- James Franco made his debut on "General Hospital" on Friday playing a character with a name close to the actor's heart - his own. While the full details of his character weren't made totally clear on the episode, the "Milk" star is playing Franco, a mysterious artist that appears to take some inspiration from British artist Banksy, a graffiti artist who has risen to fame in real life over the last decade.

Friday James Franco began his 'lengthy arc' on 'General Hospital,' in which he plays a vagrant performance artist named Franco who visits Port Charles to exhibit his work. The Hollywood A-lister's soap opera turn is all a meta part of some art film he's making with Carter, his frequent artistic collaborator who was responsible for the short 'Erased James Franco.' James Franco is best known for his roles in the feature films 'Spider-man,' 'Milk' and 'Pineapple Express,' so everyone was surprised when the Golden Globe winner announced he was joining the cast of "General Hospital" for a short-term story. Franco's first appearance on the daytime drama is today. He will be playing a character named ... what else? Franco. "There is no first name or last name. It is just Franco," he explains. "He is an artist. I think he works in various mediums. He spray paints, he tags and he arranges installations based on murder scenes. He is obsessed with death. He actually goes to real murder scenes to find inspiration."
