Good Vibes and 'Bad Weed' at the Governors Awards

Given the event's low profile and only 550 guests, the usual Oscar crowds were nowhere in sight – not that the public could have gotten a glimpse of any of the attending luminaries, whose cars were routed through a roundabout path, entering from the back of the Hollywood & High...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Academy Awards, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Jack Nicholson, Lauren Bacall

My Hollywood Breakthrough: We Destroyed the Film

By Vilmos Zsigmond (to Eric Estrin)

The dazzling light show that served as interplanetary communication in 1977’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” helped win both cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond and the film their only Oscar. Zsigmond was nominated three other times as well and won a lifetime achievement award from the ASC for a legendary career that has spanned decades and included multiple collaborations with such directors as Steven Spielberg, Robert Altman, Michael Cimino and Woody Allen. He’s the subject, along with his late friend, colleague and fellow Hungarian émigré Laszlo Kovacs, of...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Movies, Steven Spielberg, Robert Altman, Woody Allen, Close Encounters of the Third Kind

By Steve Pond The Governors Awards, which takes place Saturday night at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland, is now a real Oscar show:
Jack will be there.
I’ve confirmed that Jack Nicholson, Steven Spielberg, Alec Baldwin and Peter Fonda will join a handful of previously announced participants, including Tom Hanks, Kirk Douglas, Annette Bening and Quentin Tarantino, in saluting honorary Oscar winners Lauren Bacall, John Calley and Gordon Willis, and Irving G.
Mr. Skin: PG-13 at 25: Will the Movies Ever Grow Up (Again)?

In 1984, Steven Spielberg released Gremlins and Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom , two PG-rated films sold to children, and the intensity of this box-office blockbusters (understandably) rattled parents.

Rather than chastise Hollywood's foremost money-machine, however, the MPAA created a new ratings category specifically tailored to serve Spielberg: the PG-13. As a result, the majority of films released since 1984 have been rated PG-13.

The PG-13 rating provides an opportunity for studios to "soften" and, in fact, "dumb down" films to the point where "soft" and "dumb" are presently Hollywood's key ingredients for success.

So while movies have grown ever more mechanically violent, nudity and sexuality have been edged out of mainstream cinema, especially serious and, indeed, "adult" treatments of such subjects.

It's easy to see how PG-13 has diminished the punch of genres that employ sex as a sales element -- e.g., horror and teen farces -- but let us consider what else this ...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Celebrities, Mr. Skin, Steven Spielberg
