Jon Chattman: Get Busy Committee on Changing the Face of Hip Hop Forever

Back in the day rappers used to rhyme about McDonald's and White Castle. By the 1990s, it was all about freestyling on gang bangs and mackin'. Lately, rap has been getting a bad rap because aside from say a Kanye West, Eminem or Jay-Z, there's no true voice for the hip hop community. That changed last week when the Get Busy Committee dropped their new album Uzi Does It .

The Committee consists of veterans Ryu (Styles of Beyond), Apathy (East Coast MC), and Scoop Deville (producer for Snoop Dogg, Clipse, The Game, and more). Many have dubbed the album "hip hop album of the year" including Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. I interviewed the guys collectively last week, and they seem to agree: they're the next big thing in hip hop. Here's the blunt interview ...

  Howd Uzi come about?
We were tired of making albums that were measured by everybody else's standards. Whether it be labels, or a--holes who tried to pigeonhole us. We weren't having fun making the same old thing year after year.
'Holy Hip-Hop' Tries To Break Into Mainstream

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Terverius Black believes in hip-hop gospel so much he sold his first home to get the money needed to start his Christian-themed entertainment company.

It was a risky move, but the 34-year-old entrepreneur believes the company's diversity, which is producing music, a film, a reality television show and a gospel cruise, will help boost a struggling genre of Christian music.
Secular hip-hop used radio as a launching pad, but holy hip-hop gets little play on regular hip-hop stations and nearly none on gospel or Christian radio.

"It's tough, but we've got to get a little more creative," said Black, who started Huntsville, Ala.-based Xist (pronounced "exist") Worldwide Record Label three years ago with partner Sean Simmonds.

Both men point to hip-hop moguls like Sean "Diddy" Combs, Jay-Z and Russell Simmons, who succeeded branching outside the music industry. Even though their message is faith-based, Black and Simmonds believe they can find the same success.

Brandon Perkins: New Lil Wayne Documentary: One of Hip-Hop's Best

It's almost impossible to translate Lil Wayne's lyrics into the written word. With nearly every syllable on every one of his nearly 1000 songs of this past decade, Weezy is surly and snarly, croaking and crawling, urgent and erstwhile. But there are no accent marks for " Someone should've warned you/R-E-L-A-X like fuckin' California/Or get cornered, or get tortured, or get slaughtered/In that order ." The words out of Wayne's mouth somehow sound like an artist beyond his time, even if the words on a page are about as non-sensical as they come.

In the thrillingly intimate documentary, "Tha Carter" (DVD in stores today), director Adam Bhala Lough however finds a way to make Lil Wayne's lyrics translate into actual words. By subtitling entire mixtape verses--DJ drops sometimes included--the New Orleans lyricist is put on a pedestal that was once reserved only for Bob Dylan and John Lennon. And why not? Lil Wayne was one of the three most important rappers of the '00s, a decade where hip-hop inherited ...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Music, Lil Wayne, Hip Hop

Until the demise of the Fame Kills Tour , Kanye West had been planning to hit the road with Lady Gaga, one of the gay-friendliest pop stars out there today. So it doesn't really come out of left field to have Fergie credit him, along with her cohorts in the Black Eyed Peas, for helping make the world of hip-hop a little more open to alternative lifestyles.
"They're completely gay-friendly. Are you kidding me? Look at how they dress!" she joked to The Advocate about the guys in her band, adding, "Kanye West really did a great thing for hip-hop and made it very mixed and open."
As for her own sexuality, the singer says that although she's married now, to actor Josh Duhamel, she has experimented with girls in the past. So when the time came for her to get flirty with a girl or ...

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Music, Fergie, Kanye West, Hip Hop

Fergie Talks 'Cheating' & How Kanye West Helped Hip-Hop Become More Gay-Friendly

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- While her husband finds himself fending off allegations of an affair, Fergie admits now that she's married, having a certain kind of fun with other women isn't allowed. In a new interview with The Advocate, that appears to have been done before the scandal broke last week where a stripper alleged to various media outlets that she had an affair with Fergie's husband, Josh Duhamel, the Black Eyed Peas powerhouse said she is into girls, but won't go there now that she's married.

Find more top entertainment news, videos, and blogs on ShowHype: Celebrities, Fergie, Josh Duhamel, Kanye West, Hip Hop
