My name is Thomas Caldwell and I’m an Australian freelance writer who currently lives in Melbourne and specialises in film criticism and educational writing on film. I am the author of Film Analysis Handbook and I am also a member of the Australian Film Critics Association and a professional member of the Australian Film Institute.

Cinema Autopsy is a collection of nearly everything I have written on film over the past 10 years and I am currently updating it every 3 days, predominantly with film reviews.

My writing has appeared in various magazines and journals including The Big Issue, Senses of Cinema, Metro, Screen Education, Filmink and Screening the Past. A list of all current print publications containing my writing can be found on the In Print page.

I have appeared on various Channel 31 shows as well as radio stations 102.7 3RRR , 774 ABC and 3AK. I currently co-host The Casting Couch on JOY 94.9. Check out the On Air and Podcasts page for more information.

Although I have studied film academically, I try to make my writing as accessible as possible. I simply love film in all its forms so I don’t subscribe to any particular school of thought about what makes a good film, nor do I favour one type of film over another. Old or new; Hollywood or art-house; blockbuster or obscure; I try to value every film for what it is and what it is trying to achieve.
