Universal To Make Asteroids Movie
/Film —
... a few extra people will take notice.
That said, I can totally imagine Michael Bay making a film based on Asteroids. Hell, Armageddon could have been titled Asteroids. They have a lot of room to play with. I’m not impressed by the films listed on screenwriter’s previous credits, but you can’t really judge based on patch up work and rewrites. Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached.

Newcomer Matthew Lopez will write the script for the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. This line from the THR article is the best part. "As opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology, so the ...

Universal takes a shot at ‘Asteroids’
We Are Movie Geeks —
... I wasn’t expecting much to begin with now that I think about it.
It gets better folks. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. Yeah, even though it hasn’t hit theaters yet, his most recent project is ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’. Not a good sign, if you ask me. So, if we’re lucky we’ll get to watch 90 minutes of a little spaceship blowing hollow asteroids into skinny white blast lines on the big screen… cross your fingers!

Screen Rant —
... think Asteroids is probably one of the most harmless. Since there’s no real story to the game, there’s no real story to ruin either. But nonetheless, it’s still irritating to see this Hollywood trend continuing at full speed.
Do you think there is enough there to make a worthwhile Asteroids movie?
Asteroids is currently in the early development stages and no release date has been set as of yet.

... film. Yes Asteroids, I mean what is there in that game to make into a film? Frankly nothing at all. It's clear what the studio are doing, they're going after the name of the product, Asteroids, and if they can get that name then they'll just attach any script to it and make a film. After all it doesn't have anything to live up to does it? It's not like Asteroids the video game has any back story or deep plot, or like so many others, a whole universe to stay true to. So the world from The Hollywood Reporter through ...

Solidifying the notion that film concepts are no longer so much actual ideas as much as notable words, the movie rights to Asteroids, the 1979 Atari game that consisted of absolutely nothing but a triangular ship shooting shapes that looked roughly like asteroids (and occasionally flying saucers), were just purchased by Universal after the studio won a four-studio bidding war. Yes, four studios were really eager to make an Asteroids movie. Because it's such a good idea for a movie.

10 Early Video Games That Would Make Better Movies Than Asteroids
Television Without Pity - All Blogs —
... Apparently, the problem with movies based on video games isn't that they're never given the script attention and directorial skill that they deserve. No, apparently, the video games are just too new. Old video games have more nostalgic appeal, so more people will go to see them, right? That must be the thinking behind this latest bit of news, that Lorenzo Di Bonaventura will be producing an Asteroids movie, based on the video game about a ship that sits in the middle of the screen and blows up big asteroids, forming smaller and smaller asteroids. ...
