... here. Methinks someone high up at Universal is having a bit of Peter Pan complex. There are worse things for an executive to have, for sure... But this is the studio that's working to bring us Candyland and Battleship and now they've jumped from the board game to the classic arcade game. ASTEROIDS: THE MOVIE. Should have been an '80s movie starring Fred Savage and Lance Guest. Alas, according to Mr. Borys Kitt at Hollywood Reporter we're getting the movie now, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing and RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN's Matthew Lopez attached to script. Of course ...

Watch the video above of the game and tell me what about that says make it into a big blockbuster movie. What is next Pong? ...

... will be developing this story from scratch. Hollywood Reporter notes: Universal . . . is used to that development process, as it's in the middle of doing just that for several of the Hasbro board game properties it is translating to the big screen, such as "Battleship" and "Candyland." Couldn't they just combine Battleship with Asteroids so we could have a plotless tale of shooting that spanned skies and sea? Doesn't that sound awesome? via Hollywood Reporter

Asteroids Arcade Game Adaptation Baffles. Today in Film Bloggery 07/02/09

It’s an appropriate week for Universal to announce they’re making an adaptation of the classic Atari game Asteroids, because chances are the thing will end up opening on a 4th of July weekend. Just like Independence Day and Armageddon. Actually, as far as I can tell a movie of that arcade game could very well be a sequel to Armageddon. Except that Universal won the four-studio bidding war, and Disney did not (I’m unsure if Disney was even ...

... * The Hollywood Reporter says that the very old video game, “Asteroids,” is being turned into a movie. I guess “Pong: The Movie” was already taken. (That joke can’t be original, can it?) Begging the question: Why?????????!!!!!!! I’m not saying it couldn’t turn out to be a fun movie — miracles happen. However, in a world where we have thousand of science fiction novels, comics, and TV shows of all levels of quality to adapt, why use a game only old guys like me remember as an excuse to make a silly sci-fi ...
