Berg Confirmed to Direct Dune
Published 3/18/2008 at FilmWad
There were some talks a few months ago during the strike, but Peter Berg has been officially confirmed as the director of the next feature film adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel Dune. Kevin Misher of Misher Films has acquired the rights from Herbert's estate and plans to produce, as he did for Berg's second directorial effort The Rundown. There are no writers currently attached to the project. The producers are approaching it from the angle that the "theme of finite ecological resources [is] particularly timely." Richard Rubenstein is also producing. He produced the Sci-Fi Channel's Dune ...

Peter Berg Packs His Bags for Arrakis
Published 3/18/2008 at Vulture
... Berg Climbs Dune: Peter Berg will be the next director to fail to bring the grandeur of Frank Herbert's Dune to the screen, following David Lynch and whoever the hell directed that Sci Fi Channel mini-series. Producer Kevin Misher and Paramount believe that novel's twin themes of ecological peril and expensive special effects will be especially appealing to contemporary audiences. [Variety] ...

What do you think you're 'Dune'?
Published 3/18/2008 by Glenn Kenny at In The Company Of Glenn
... One thing you've got to love about Hollywood, or perhaps just the players therein, is its/their boundless optimism. Witness today's report in Variety about yet another stab at a screen version of the putative cult classic novel Dune. You'd think that after the critical and box-office debacle that was David Lynch's version (and yes, reader, as you know me well, you will not be surprised to learn that I'm kind of fond of this highly misbegotten film—those worms rule!) and the this-is-on-the-Sci-Fi-Channel-and-who-gives-a-shit miniseries, the message to ...

Should Peter Berg Remake Dune?
Published 3/18/2008 at Horror Hacker
Oh how the spice flows! First, there was the David Lynch-directed Dune . It was somewhat boring, yet still has a cult following of fans. But those Sandworms -- a more disgusting invertebrate would be hard to find in film, to be sure (and if you forgot how monstrously vengeful those worms could be, check out the clip after the jump). Then came Frank Herbert's Dune , a miniseries done for the SciFi Channel that had less style and was frankly less tantalizing. Now, Variety is reporting that the Sandworms are coming back in a Peter Berg-directed remake. But before you go dyeing your eyes blue, know that there are some early warning signs that ...

[Variety] · Peter Berg signs on to direct Dune for Paramount, presumably righting whatever wrongs were committed against the sacred source material by David Lynch's Sting-in-a-licorice-thong version. Yesterday was a very long day for me. I woke up at 5pm on March 16th. I have really bad hours currently. I woke up at 5pm and hadn’t been to sleep until 11pm on March 17. It was virtually 30 hours of drinking and making my way around Cambridge on a pub crawl. I was pretty delirious at one point. I was able to recover however, with a 15 hour nap. ...

Future Shock
Published 3/21/2008 by Kirby at Movie Dearest
More remakes are on the horizon, further mining the films of my younger years and making me feel real old. So let's all feel old together: First up is the vague news of a RoboCop reboot. The original is a sci fi classic (directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Peter Weller) that was followed by crappy sequels and TV series, so initial hopes aren't very high that this one will fare any better then those attempted follow-ups. Next is yet another attempt to bring Frank Herbert's epic novel Dune to the screen. Both David Lynch's version (featuring ...
