Also I notice that Beatles-themed musical flick Across the Universe was tenth. That’s a surprise to me, because that movie was only in 339 theaters. But they must have packed the joint in those 339 theaters, because they made it into the top 10. But then again, it doesn’t take much effort to get into the Top Ten these days. It only takes about a $20 million dollar take to finish first in September, it seems.

Why Do Studios Let Great Movies Die?
Screen Rant —
... Ok, sure if a movie cost $100 million and makes $300MM that's $200MM profit. But they're spending $1 to earn $3. With the smaller films they don't have to put as much money at risk and $1 could return $6 or even more, and they could put more of them out.
I don't know, it just chaps me to see crappy movies do so well while movies that are just as much fun and entertaining fall by the wayside.

... flick, and the tracking was through the roof.
Maybe people are just cartooned-out. Too many of them this year. Although $39 mil is still nothing to sneeze at.
It was a long drop to Saw IV and Dan in Real Life. The Game Plan just nosed out Martian Child, the other new wide release this week, for sixth place. By the way, the total take for The Game Plan is now up to $81,957,000.

Box Office: Bee Movie stings Fred Claus, Tom Cruise
Film School Rejects —
... at all.
For the new releases, the numbers are all miserable. Fred Claus finished third at $19 mil, a big disappointment. That depressing war-on-terror flick Lions for Lambs only brought in $6.7 mil. So now everyone is trashing Tom Cruise again and critiquing his ability to carry a movie. This movie got killed by the critics, so no wonder no one showed up. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 27%! That’s just plain terrible.

... wouldn’t go watch Mr. Magorium either. But I might watch Bee Movie.
Also, there was a surprise in seventh spot as No Country for Old Men did just over $3 million in business in just its second week at theaters. But it was only in 148 theaters! I find it really unusual for a movie to hit the Top Ten with a theater count so low. But it doesn’t take much money to make the Weekend Top Ten these days.

Reject Update: Enchanted Gives Thanks for a $50 Mil. Week
Film School Rejects —
... Well, as expected Enchanted was your box office champ this weekend with a $35 million performance for the Friday-Sunday period and a $50 million performance for the entire 5-day Thanksgiving period. The big surprise for me was that This Christmas finished in second place this weekend with an $18 mil performance. That one I didn’t see coming. The rest of the movies finished pretty much as expected.

Pity for Tom Cruise? I think not
Reel Fanatic —
... It seems that the flick, the first for Mr. Cruise and producing partner Paula Wagner, will not even hit $20 million at the domestic box office, and less than $60 million worldwide. Here are the hard numbers from through last weekend, according to the great Box Office Mojo site: Still playing on 1,527 screens, the flick had managed to take in just a meager $13,795,571 domestically. For a bit of perspective, the Coen brothers' "No Country for Old Men" has already taken in $16,313,580 playing on only 860 screens (though that is expanding further this weekend, with ...

... as many people predicted. The Amy Adams flick too in a big $17 million this weekend for another number one finish, ahead of This Christmas, Beowulf, and then Awake, which died on the operating table with a $6 million take.
(You thought perhaps I might say Awake “fell asleep at the box office?” More like the audiences falling asleep, frankly. The critics all hated this movie, too.)

Apparently, Lionsgate is too afraid of skipping a year so Saw V will be released on October 24, 2008, according to Box Office Mojo. Instead, it pulled in an alarmingly low $26 million this weekend at a whopping 3,500 theaters, much closer to Eragon's disasterous $23 million opening weekend last Christmas than the $65 million opening weekend for the first Chronicles of Narnia film or the routine $90 and $100 million openings for the Harry Potter films. (The lowest opening weekend for a Lord of the Rings film was $47 million.) ...
Box Office Update: The Golden Compass Lays a Golden Egg

... drumming up interest in it.
Then again, maybe Nicole Kidman’s appearance on TV would have repelled even more people. Who knows.
Anyway, my point is that the Writer’s Strike is probably causing some collateral damage. If you ask me, this movie was underpromoted. And the reason it was underpromoted was because people were seeing 15-year-old reruns of The Tonight Show on TV instead of clips from this movie.

Box Office Update: Will Smith is Legend at the Box Office

... find that one hard to believe, too.)
I notice that business for a lot of the other movies in the top 10 was not that good, though. The Golden Compass took a 65 per cent dive, for example, down to $9 mil. And a take of $1.8 mil was all it took for Atonement to make it into the Top Ten in the limited number of theaters it was in (117 to be exact). So it was sort of feast or famine at the theaters this weekend.

... in the armor for Apatow. Just having his name associated with a movie is no guarantee of a hit, as we are reminded this week. Keep in mind, the only reason Apatow is making movies in the first place is because his series Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared were flops on TV! Just because Apatow is producing something is no guarantee it will get an audience, because a lot of his stuff has been, ahem, a hard sell (pardon the pun).

Top 10 Worst Weekends In Box Office History
Best Week Ever —
Before we jump to conclusions and deem that "Meet The Spartans" and "Rambo" finishing #1 and #2 in the weekend box office means that humankind is so completely and utterly f*cked beyond recognition, it can only be identified by its dental records, I've done some research and found some other weekend box office lists that are just as bad. My point is, while it's easy (and correct) to rip on "Meet The Spartans" as much as possible, the idea that humanity is completely worthless in terms of which movies it chooses to see is by no means new.

SF Universe —
... Box Office Mojo said the kung-fu fantasy pulled in $20.9 million. Last week’s top movie, slasher remake Prom Night, lost much of its audience bringing in around $9.1 million. The George Clooney-Renee Zellweger pairing in Leatherheads is still on the fast train to Floptown. Its earnings fell 52 percent for a 17-day take of $26.6 million. By even the most optimistic of counts, that’s a disappointment for such a “big” movie. ...

Never hitting No. 1? No problem
Reel Fanatic —
... Now, for the summer blockbusters that are about to come our way, that would of course be a fallacy, but there are plenty of movies that never reached No. 1 but still had a very healthy domestic box-office take. Here, with a hearty thanks to Box Office Mojo (which is really a stat-lover's dream come true), are 10 (with their chart positions) that I love from the list of the top 150 grossing flicks that never managed to make it to the top of the box office pack (the No. 1 flick, by the way, is "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," which never went higher than No. 2 but still ...
Mullets and Nipples: When Corey Met Amy on the Set of Crank 2
Film School Rejects —
... The idea of a Crank sequel may surprise some people since the first one was overly obnoxious and stupid. Unfortunately, poor quality isn’t enough to stop the prospects of a sequel in Hollywood. (ie. Transformers 2) A quick gander over at BoxOfficeMojo.com explains it all… Crank only cost $12 million to make but it grossed $44 million worldwide. I’m no math wiz, but that equation equals sequel. ...

10 - The Visitor - $687,000 - total - $3,403,000
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian had a decent first weekend, but it was disappointing based on the first movie. Yes, $56 million sounds like a lot of money, but considering it cost somewhere around $200 million to make, they have a long way to go.
Iron Man does not need to worry about making its money back. They continue to have an “iron grasp” on the movie viewers.

Indy Can't Defeat Iron Man's Opening Day Box Office
Cinema Blend News —
... much as they like Tony Stark, assuming you judge popularity by box office numbers that is. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had its first full day of release yesterday, and despite extremely high early ticket sales, didnt break any records, and it didnt even break Iron Mans single day totals from a week ago. It did however, do really really really well. In fact, it made more in one day than some movies (I'm looking at you Speed Racer ) will make all year. Box Office Comedy Fight: "Get Smart" Vs "Love Guru"
FilmWad —
The critics have spoken, and it sounds like while "Get Smart" doesn't reinvent any wheels, "The Love Guru" is barely watchable tripe. A number of reviewers have gone so far to call it "the worst film of the year," but then critics can be a dramatic bunch when they want to be. As we all know, the critics don't decide the box office, sometimes far from it. So which (if either) of these high profile comedies will strike gold this weekend? BoxOfficeMojo's Reader Poll for today (June 20) sheds a little more light on the situation. When asked "What is your ...

Meanwhile, one of California's signature industries and locales -- Hollywood -- appears to be a corrupting influence, at least in the eyes of some Americans. Forty-two percent said they feel their values are threatened by the entertainment capital; 56% were not threatened.
42 precent of Americans feel their values are threatened by Hollywood? Seems like a vague question... perhaps peoples' values are "great movies existing" and this survey happened to be conducted on the following box-office ...

... But you know what? It's almost creepy how well these things do: For a production budget of about $20 million apiece, Date, Epic, and Spartans made about $84 million each. (That's worldwide box-office, and thanks to Mojo for the numerals.) So Fox essentially gave these guys $60 million and three shots, and they virtually quadrupled their budget each time out. (So why does the IMDb rate these films at 2.6, 2.3, and 2.4, respectively? I have no idea. How many times must a person get smacked on the skull before they start avoiding the hammer?) ...

Admit It. Who Went To See This Masterpiece?

My chihuahua is giving me the silent treatment this morning because I dissed his bitches by not going to see "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" this weekend. Actually, he would have given me the silent treatment anyway because he's too busy being a lazy son of a bitch! Honestly, does he really need to sleep 23.5 hours a day?
Yeah, I was a bad chihuahua owner by not handing over $12 (seriously) to see this masterpiece. If there was a weed hookah and booze bar at the theater, I would've been the first ho in line. I didn't brave the screaming brats and stoners, but a lot of whores did. BHC was ...
Wow, really?
The Blemish —
Following up on Pajiba’s review of “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” (try to guess if they liked it), Box Office Mojo says that it was number one over the weekend. Going up against other new releases like “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” and “Blindness,” it managed to best them and make $29 million. $12 million more than last week’s number one, “Eagle Eye”. No small feat considering the trailer looked absolutely horrible. Like, if you bleached your brain, you still wouldn’t forget how horrible it is. It would make even ...

Oscars vs Box Office Chapter 735

Conservative film blogger Dirty Harry is often best ignored when he’s aggressively railing against the liberal Hollywood elite, but when he offers a faux-populist view of filmgoing that’s so obstinately limited in scope that it’s actually potentially dangerous, I have to say something.
The gist: the cursed Hollywood elite is once again pushing movies with purely elite appeal for awards, and audiences are not responding to these films because after years of reading reviews written by partisan elitists who are out of touch with What The People Want, they no longer trust film critics. ...

Sunday Discussion: Why Do Certain Movies Flop?
FirstShowing.net —
... about an animated film titled Delgo that was being called the biggest flop of all-time. ... - $1,500,000
Doubt - $1,400,000
Benjamin Button - TBA
Revolutionary Road - TBA

io9 —

Gloating awaits. Maybe it was the appalling reviews, or the unconvincing trailers. Perhaps a nation's theatergoers just realized that even Adam Sandler's Bedtime Stories would be a better way of spending an evening. Whatever the reason, Miller's movie version of Will Eisner's classic comic earned only $3,825,000 on its first day of release, coming in below movies like The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button ...
