Un Conte de Noel (Competition) "Now that is a movie!" I exclaimed to a friend on exiting this morning's screening of Arnaud Desplechin's Un Conte De Noel (A Christmas Story). The bourgeois-dysfunctional-family-comes-together-for-a-holiday setup is one of the hoariest in any... [link]

... Glenn Kenny: "The bourgeois-dysfunctional-family-comes-together-for-a-holiday setup is one of the hoariest in any medium, but if anybody can conjure something fresh out of it, it's Desplechin, and boy does he ever.... The creation of such a vivid, individualized group of characters and such a compelling roster of dilemmas is a staggering enough feat. But what makes this movie such a darkly exuberant feast is Desplechin's storytelling." ...

... And why bother traveling thousands of miles and spending thousands of dollars just to hear Glenn Kenny call Sean Penn a dick in person? Look at it this way: Spout's Karina Longworth is doing some of her best writing from the airport, and her subject — Vogue's recent Sex and the City issue — addresses a movie not even screening at Cannes: ...

Cannes Nearly Wrapped

... [France] Arnaud Desplechin has taken on a difficult task: Make a fresh movie about a dysfunctional family during the holidays. What an overpopulated genre. Desplechin is amazing and at least some critics, like Glenn Kenny, are ga-ga for it. The consensus seems to be that it's too messy to win over everyone (or win over the jury) but I can't wait to see it. Desplechin directing Kings & Queen cast members Catherine Deneuve and Matthieu Amalric again? I'm there. ...

“Three Monkeys” premieres to raves. While I was off in the land of the Real World last night, more Cannes action went down. What seems to have been a better day for film than the fests opening day, with a number of films playing to rave reviews, my original dissatisfaction has subsided, the films included: Three Monkeys , Waltz with Bashir , Hunger , Leonera , Tokyo! and ...
Cannes Diary: The Movie That Wasn’t There
My trip to Cannes begins at a bar at JFK––a Chili’s Too!, to be precise––where I flip through an abandoned issue of VOGUE whilst waiting to board. It just so happens that this issue of VOGUE exists to promote the Sex and the City movie––which, not so long ago, was rumored to be premiering at Cannes , before its gala debut was inexplicably bumped up a few days and over the English ...
