And Colin Farrell wasn't drunk (or if he was, it wasn't why he slipped on the way to the podium), and John Travolta wasn't pulled downward by the weight of his own irrelevance. 1)Was the lack of blockbusters among the "best picture" nominees responsible for the miserably low ratings? My colleague Zubin Jelveh crunches the numbers on that popular theory and concludes it can't be the sole explanation.
2)Where were all the fancy new commercials? After all, haven't we been hearing ad nauseam about how the Oscars are "the Super Bowl for women"? Stuart Elliot blames the strike for the weak crop of ads; unsure whether the show would go on, agencies declined to commission pricey new spots.
