I like every song on this album to moderately high degrees, and that's definitely enough for me to recommend that you pick this up at your local record store, just so long as you're not expecting something progressive and challenging from the band. ... I've been streaming Wilco (The Album) on NPR, and am liking it so far in an unremarkable sort of way. It's less of a from-old-men-for-old-men album than Sky Blue Sky, less peculiar than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but possibly a more lo-fi, less produced version of A Ghost Is Born. All good things, but nothing earth-shattering or life-changing so far. ...

Overal, however, this is another great release from the band (their seventh) with highlights including “Bull Black Nova,” a monstrous jam that finds guitarist Nels Cline really stretching out. A duet with Feist ("You and I") also sticks out as particularly good. This collection of undeniably solid tunes is great partnered with the Ashes of American Flags DVD, which chronicles the band's tour in 2008.

... the album has a bit more going for it than the last one, but I suppose the days of Tweedy getting really experimental and interesting are gone for now. I'll have to give the album a few more listens before I pass final judgement, but it's hard for me to do that when I keep putting Black Bull Nova on repeat before just going back to that awesome Son Volt album.
