Should TV Networks Have a Family Hour?
Published 9/6/2007 by BuzzSugar at BuzzSugar -- Entertainment hourly.
That picture up there? That's "American Dad," otherwise known as the most objectionable show on television, according to the Parents Television Council. The group issued a report this week that said the show had more violent, sexual and profane content than any other show on TV, and its network, Fox, was singled out as the worst network for children (the CW ranked the cleanest; bet that changes after "Gossip Girl" comes out).
One thing "American Dad" has going for it is that it airs later in the night, at 9:30 p.m., when many young children are likely to be in ...

"House" Episode 1: "Alone"
Published 9/26/2007 by BuzzSugar at BuzzSugar -- Entertainment hourly.
What's a "House" without any team to torture? Why, if Tuesday's season premiere is any indication, he's the same cranky doctor as always. To check out my thoughts on the fourth-season premiere and share your own, just With Chase, Cameron and Foreman all gone, House started off the episode by recruiting a janitor to help him solve the case of a woman who was crushed by a building and developed a mysterious illness on top of that. "House" Rundown: Episode 2, "The Right Stuff"

As much as I loved watching House work alone on last week's "House," it was even better to see him surrounded by new potential team members to torture. I'm not sure if any of these new candidates have (ahem) the right stuff to be House's new lackeys, but it's sure going to be fun to watch them try. To talk about the episode, just Our patient of the week: an Air Force captain who's supposed to start the astronaut training program when she starts having symptoms of synesthesia. "House" Recap: Episode 3, "97 Seconds"
Published 10/10/2007 by BuzzSugar at BuzzSugar -- Entertainment hourly.
What a strange episode of "House" this week, huh? It was one that broke down all the normal rules of the show: There were three medical cases instead of the usual one; House took a much more dramatic step than usual in an attempt to solve one of them; and not everything worked out well in the end. To talk more about the episode, just I suppose "House" fans who worried about the show getting stuck in a one-patient, one-diagnosis rut should take heart in last night's episode, which had a lot going on. We had House playing games with his 10 remaining fellowship candidates, splitting them up by gender ("if ...

There are two key ingredients to the basic American Idol recipe: there's music, and the audience picks the winner. Idol is the biggest thing on TV, but Fox's attempts at separating the two elements that make it so successful haven't worked out so well — On the Lot , all voting and no music, limped to a finish, while Nashville , all music and no voting, was the first of the fall's new shows to be pulled. But both parts of the Idol formula will be in full effect tonight during the premiere of The Next Great American Band , essentially a large-scale battle of the bands. Like Idol , the ...

See, the patient of the week has a seizure in a funeral home and starts believing the cadavers, as well as her long-dead mother, have come alive. House 's supernatural episodes generally aren't my favorites, but I'm hoping this one will be appropriately spooky. Fox held a big event in Times Square this morning to unveil the trailer for the upcoming seventh season of 24 . But if you couldn't be in New York to hobnob with Mary Lynn Rajskub at the party, no worries — I've got the trailer right here. A couple of early thoughts on it: Given the show's now-legendary production problems putting this season together, it's amazing they have this many scenes done already. But there's a rather disappointing lack of Chloe — and not even a glimpse of Janeane Garofalo's character. The trailer opens with Jack on trial, and it's good to see the show ...

Meanwhile, CBS has the premiere of its cleaned-up version of Dexter, and Fox has new episodes of all of its animated shows. That's in addition to regular goodies like The L Word and The Wire. So I'm wondering: What will you be ...

American Idol Rundown: The Top 12 Girls

Maybe it was all the hype about this being the best Top 24 ever. Maybe it was all the promises about things being different this year . But after watching the first two performance nights of this season's American Idol , I'm awfully let down. Maybe there's still some great talent hidden away in there — and it is possible, if the voters do the right thing in these early rounds, that we'll end up with a strong Top 12. It's just that after the boys failed to wow me on Tuesday , I wanted something more from the girls on Wednesday, and I didn't get it. There were some good performances ...
American Idol Rundown: The Top 10 Guys

Well, almost everything I knew about American Idol this season is wrong, at least if Tuesday's performances by the top 10 guys are any indication. Several of the favorites had off nights, while those who seemed certain to be out before the Top 12 sounded great. One thing is still certain, thought: On the guys' side, David Archuleta seems like the one to beat. The night's theme was '70s songs (please tell me this means next week will be '80s), and we also learned some fun facts about the top 10 guys along the way . Don't forget to vote for which guys are going home , and to see my take on the ...

American Idol was a rollercoaster last night. At first I was just disappointed that two of last week's strongest contestants kicked off the show with weak performances. Lucky for us it wasn't a complete waste of a night, since the final acts were very entertaining. Here's my two cents:
Michael Johns was off the entire song
Jason Castro was just OK.
Luke was the most improved from last week, but sadly after he performed, the show stalled big time. The acts in between Luke and Chikezie were basically forgettable.

So, might as well just come out and say it: '70s night was not exactly the best for our American Idol ladies. And now I'm really wondering what exactly it is the producers think they're doing this season. After all that promotion telling us it's the most talented group ever, why wouldn't they start without having themes at all, giving us a few weeks to get to know this group as they sing their very best songs? That said, I'm not sure it was entirely the theme that hurt the ladies on Wednesday. How can you go that wrong with a decade that brought us Carly Simon and Heart? And yet, while there were two ...
Fox Announces Family Guy Spinoff: Cleveland

It looks like Cleveland Brown, neighbor to Family Guy 's Peter Griffin, will be the star of his own show. Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane, along with Cleveland's voice actor Mike Henry and former Simpsons writer Rich Appel are collaborating on the project , tentatively titled Cleveland . As Hollywood Reporter puts it, "Cleveland, who plays off black stereotypes, is the most levelheaded among Griffin's trio of friends." That's for sure. In fact, I'm probably more likely to tune into this spinoff than I am to watch Family Guy these days, as I sometimes get tired of Peter Griffin's ...
TV Tonight: New Amsterdam

I truly have no idea if New Amsterdam , which premieres tonight on Fox after American Idol , is going to be a huge hit or a huge flop. It has quite a few things working in its favor: an attractive star (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), an intriguing premise (detective will remain immortal until he finds true love), and a plum time slot for its premiere. On the other hand, I found the first episode of the show to be utterly ridiculous . Not, again, that that's necessarily a bad thing; as I noted in my Pilot Watch last Summer, the show didn't work for me as a drama, but I thought it was an ...

I'm still not sure I've seen this year's American Idol contestants meet the "best singers ever!" hype, but Tuesday's '80s night performance from the guys was . . . better. Everybody at least seemed to meet a general standard of mediocrity, and a few people went beyond to deliver some of the best performances of the season. It was just in time, too, as the vote determines which singers will become finalists in next week's top 12. In addition to the songs, we got to hear about the contestants' most embarrassing moments; I wonder if David Hernandez would count being outed as a stripper on his ...

Finally a men's show that really entertained! It started a little slow (bye bye Luke) but cutie Danny Archuleta showed off his voice again, and the show picked up. Here's what else I loved about last night:
Danny Noriega, what can I say? I love the sass.
David "Stripper" Hernandez — Celine Dion, really? Yes, I know Meatloaf also sang it, but all I saw was Celine (bye bye boy).
Michael Johns, the Jim Morrison wannabe, was an early favorite, but as expected, he's starting to fall behind as the others improve. Luckily he sang the song from The Breakfast ...

In seven seasons of American Idol , I've seen some bizarre things, but I'm not sure I've ever seen an episode as weird as Wednesday's '80s night. There was Paula climbing in Simon's lap, Randy babbling about Journey, Simon snapping at Seacrest — pretty much every strange thing that could happen in an Idol episode all rolled into one. The good news is that the antics didn't overshadow the singing, which — for the second night in a row — was pretty good. Yeah, I've been ragging on the whole "most. talented. ever." line all season, but honestly? It's entirely possible that after tonight's ...

I expected more bad Whitney Houston imitations, but we only had one and of course it was the opening number. Asia'h was OK, but I think she is in trouble along with the performer who followed her, Kady.
As much as I want Amanda gone, figures Simon raved about her, so she should secure that top 12 position.

Beatles Night on American Idol: Awesome or Blasphemous?
Published 3/11/2008 by BuzzSugar at BuzzSugar -- Entertainment hourly.
When the top 12 American Idol contestants take the stage tonight, they'll be singing Beatles songs for the first time ever in the competition. I have to say, I'm feeling torn about it. On the one hand, Beatles songs are covered so often and so much I'm becoming desensitized to it (Target's version of "Hello Goodbye" with the pun "good buy" has stopped being so irritating, for example). On the other hand, stop butchering the Beatles!

While there did seem to be a few singers who took the legends' names in vain, most of the performances were at least respectable, with some truly awesome ones sprinkled in. OK, so American Idol didn't actually take a trip to Dolly Parton's theme park (though that would have been great television, don't you think?) — instead, Parton came to them. The country legend was this season's first guest coach, taking the remaining nine contestants through the songs in her well-known catalog. We're down to the two Davids after weeks of competition and, just like last year, I actually think we have two good, different options on our hands with these finalists. Will it be the squeaky clean kid with the pretty voice, or the rock-and-roll bartender with a knack for turning any song into his own?

American Idol Davids Face Off
Published 5/21/2008 by PopSugar at POPSUGAR -- Insanely addictive.
Last night on American Idol, Simon declared David Archuleta the winner of the night by a knockout. Archuleta sang his heart out and it showed, but we're still hoping for a David Cook victory.
The judges were enthusiastic throughout the night with comments like "best performance so far," "flawless," "stunning," "phenomenal," and "that was hot baby!" The Clive Davis song choices were my favorite. The show ended with Archuleta singing "Imagine" (actually a prediction Molly made earlier). Cook tried something different and although it may have cost him ...

What Kind of Album Should Archuleta Make?
Published 6/6/2008 by BuzzSugar at BuzzSugar -- Entertainment hourly.
It will come as a surprise to no one that this year's American Idol runner-up, David Archuleta, has officially inked a record deal.
After I thought, "Well, good for him," I had a head-scratch moment. See, I can't for the life of me figure out what kind of album he could make.
Based on the types of songs he tended toward on the show, the logical fit would be adult contemporary. But does anyone really want to hear that from a 17-year-old? Then again, remember how awkward things got when he tried to do something more up-tempo?
So what what do you ...

Critics Love Lost, Hate The Moment of Truth

[image] The results of the latest TV Week critics' poll are out, and Lost has claimed a spot at the top of the list. Critics ranked the show first for the six months starting in January, beating out The Wire for the No. 1 slot. The show apparently won by a wide margin , claiming a spot in the top five on almost every list submitted. Because of the writers' strike , it's even tougher than usual to compare this Summer's list with the Winter rankings that found Pushing Daisies at the top; that show didn't air a single episode in 2008, so it didn't ...
So You Think You Can Dance Rundown: The Top 12
Published 7/10/2008 by BuzzSugar at BuzzSugar -- Entertainment hourly.
The top dozen So You Think You Can Dance dancers took to the stage Wednesday for one of the series' true milestone performance shows. The next cut is the difference between going on the national tour and staying home, so a lot was on the line — and, even for those couples who do survive, this could be their last time dancing together. So, we entered the night with a lot of questions: Would anyone obviously dance their way into the top 10? Would anyone clearly deserve to miss out? Would the judges ever say anything to Jessica besides how clearly inferior she is to the fantastic spectacle of a human being ...

JJ Abrams Doesn't Want to Confuse You That Much With Fringe

[image] JJ Abrams doesn't exactly shy away from constructing complex stories ( Lost and Alias , anyone?). But at this morning's TCA panel for Fringe , he insisted that his new series will be a little less obscure. Abrams told the story of watching an old episode of Alias while hanging out with Greg Grunberg and seeing the show from an outsider's perspective: "It was impenetrable," he said. "I was like, I know I should understand this, but . . . who the f**k is that guy?" Fringe , on the other hand, is an experiment for Abrams. The show, which stars Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, ...

Buzz In: Which Couples Do You Want to See on SYTYCD?

[image] This week, the So You Think You Can Dance dancers mix things up for the first time since the finals began, getting new partners in addition to their new dance styles. It's easy to get attached to the pairings thus far — Katee and Joshua and Courtney and Gev seem particularly well-matched to me — but it can be revealing when the dancers are asked to adapt to new people. I'd be curious to see what Will can do with one of the stronger female dancers, and I wonder how Chelsea would fare with Twitch. I'm also wondering who will be Comfort's new partner now that she's replacing the injured Jessica. ...

Do You Prefer Watching People Succeed or Fail on Reality TV?
Published 7/30/2008 by BuzzSugar at BuzzSugar -- Entertainment hourly.
Many popular reality shows (Project Runway, American Idol, et al) are all about showing people at the top of their game. But, as the Boston Globe recently pointed out, lots of other breakout reality hits are all about watching people get humiliated, from Fear Factor to this Summer's Wipeout to The Two Coreys.
I can see the appeal of either type of show — though one is more like a great theater or music performance, and the other like, well, a train wreck. Which do you prefer?

So it's not exactly a secret that I can be a little sappy , but man, I was not expecting there to be so many moments in Wednesday's final So You Think You Can Dance competition show that would get the waterworks aflowing. From the "OMG last time ever!" look on Courtney's face at the end of the intro to that Celine Dion song playing when Twitch talked about the Viennese Waltz, Twitch patting the stage at the end of his solo to Mia's group hug at the end, well, it was a night perfectly constructed to turn me into a sloppy mess.
