FROM THE SAME PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU PIA ZADORA AS "BEST NEW STAR OF THE YEAR": Golden Globe nominations have been announced, including seven (?!) nominees for Best Picture-Drama, a John C. Reilly nod for Best Actor-Comedy/Musical for Walk Hard, a clearly not-yet-updated-online Best Actress list for Comedy/Musical,** and much general love for Atonement, Charlie Wilson's War (as a Comedy/Musical?), Michael Clayton and No Country for Old Men. No mention of Sidney Lumet's Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, ...

The Globes Honor TV; Will TV Sink the Globes?

... includes only film noms. See their press release for the full list--scroll down, natch, for TV. But TV is more central to the Globes than usual this year, if not for pleasant reasons. NBC is scheduled to air the awards next month, but the writers' strike means that there will be no one to write the banter. (There's been talk that the guild might give the show a waiver, allowing writers to work on it, but that would be a silly concession for a striking union to make.) OK, fine: just get everyone a little drunker than usual, and the awards may be entertaining anyway. The ...

Well, let’s focus on the positive now. 30 Rock and Pushing Daisies! Tina Fey! Lee Pace and Anna Friel! Alec Baldwin! Michael C. Hall! Donald Sutherland!

Golden (Yawn) Globes

You can find all the nominees here.
I know there's all that talk about the Globes as a barometer for Oscars, and I like some of the nominees. But the Globes still strike me as an award best known for letting potential winners drink before they get their prizes.
As barometers go, they're a weird one because they split so many movie categories between drama and comedy/musical, giving them twice as many chances to pick a winner as the Oscars have. (Or more than twice as many. There are seven nominees for best drama this year.)
And they are prone ...

... the actual awards show itself seems to last 3 weeks, allowing winners to ramble on and on, thanking everyone they know — and their brother. But despite the strung out awards show, the Golden Globe Awards serve a very specific purpose. They are the big setup for Oscar. Quite often, the awards presented by the HFPA can be used as good predictors for what will happen on Oscar night. Of course, this isn’t always true, but it is worth keeping an eye on.
Yesterday, the HFPA announced their nominations for this year’s awards. Take a look at the list below. ...
