Fans of Kaz Kiriya and the look he achieved in CASSHERN and GOEMON, strap in and get ready for this one, because Shore is an out-and-out effects genius and what he’s creating here – the film is still in production, as far as I understand – is a period set martial arts fantasy. Yes, it’s an Irish produced martial arts fantasy. Let that sink in a bit. Then go look at it and wonder why Ireland hasn’t done it before, because this is bloody well gorgeous. THE CUP OF TEARS trailer certainly ranks high on style points, but the big question is – will the film itself have enough of a story to keep things from eventually getting stale? Style is nice, but it can get old easily, if that is all there is. Check out the trailer after the jump.

... Cup of Tears trailer is almost entirely computer generated. Aside from some close-ups, there’s not much to go on as to what this movie would actually sound like, or really even what it’s about. Great CGI visuals can’t carry an otherwise awful movie.
So, I’m on the fence about whether The Cup of Tears deserves funding, or whether it’s just a really impressive personal project. What do you think?

This is Gary Shore's second feature film and he takes what appears to be a samurai revenge story and transposes it into a '300'/'Sin City'-esque cinematic backdrop. Except there's one bit of the trailer that's in space. A SAMURAI FILM IN SPACE?! The finished producT may very well be style over substance but that's ambition for you.
