benji23 And, contrary to industry wisdom, it seems the album was helped by premature leaks.

Turns out that total is estimated to be between 850,000 and 950,000 copies, according to EW—an astonishing number in a year that's seen nothing but doldrums sales-wise , and a big hint as to why "carter iii lyrics" is such a hot item on Google Trends right now. Meanwhile, 2007 sales champ Kanye West is egging on his blog readers to push Wayne over the million mark. If it works, I'm sure every other blogger out there will claim credit. Tha Carter III Might Crack A Millie
Published 6/11/2008 by eskay at Nah Right
EW spoke with an exec at Universal who says Carter III is about to do Curtis Kanye numbers.
Tha Carter III just came out Tuesday morning, so it’s difficult to tell from less than a day’s worth of sales, but an exec at Lil Wayne’s label estimates the disc will sell between 850,000 and 950,000 by the end of its first week. If their numbers are correct, that would be about double the opening figure for 2008’s current record-holder, Mariah Carey’s E=MC2, which opened with 443,000 copies. “The ...

Will Lil Wayne Steal Coldplay's Thunder? Yes, Say Experts

... Now, EW is reporting that Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III (out yesterday) is set to be this week's No. 1 album, possibly moving as many as 950,000 copies, which would certainly make it the year's fastest-selling album so far. Given that Coldplay's last record, X&Y;, made its chart debut with only a measly 737,000 in 2005 (back when there was still some semblance of a recording industry), and the unlikelihood that the nationwide number of CD-purchasing Coldplay fans has increased in the past three years, it stands to reason that Viva La ...
Thinking over Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter III'

... Well, for one thing, Tha Carter III seems to be selling a lot of CDs. Some people are saying it's on track to maybe crack the fabled million-sold mark by the end of its first week, and they're not even kidding. (The CD was in such high demand before it came out yesterday that some unscrupulous retailers even quietly sold a few copies as soon as they came in stock, enough to ...

The sales the first few hours were exceeding the rate that the Kanye album sold a year ago. Wayne was one of these records that, because it was so highly anticipated, with the leaks and everything, it caused more people to go out at 8 in the morning to buy the CD." ...
