A Casualty in the Blurb-Whore Wars
Published 1/7/2008 by jbercovici at Portfolio.com: Mixed Media
On Friday, we brought you the first installment of PETER VS. PETE, a comparison of blurb-crazed film critics Peter Travers (of Rolling Stone) and Pete Hammond (of Maxim).
It was also the last installment, because today comes news that Hammond has been let go from Maxim.
Coincidence? Definitely: Hammond was fired over the holidays.
top 10 worst critics of the year
Published 1/8/2008 at OH NO!!
efilmcritic came out with its list of the "The Top Ten Criticwatch Whores of the Year" where they count down the worst reviewers of the year. At first, I thought it was stupid, but after reading it...it kind of makes sense. The list quotes their various reviews, but the whole list isn't formed JUST because they gave bad movies good reviews (it's also based on how many of them just don't write reviews well). - Their "bag of douche" award went to Pete Hammond from Maxim magazine...but before that article was posted, he was fired from the magazine ONTO THE LIST: 10. STEVE OLDFIELD (FOX) Oldfield is just ...
Fan Rant: Maxim Cans Film "Critic" Pete Hammond
Published 1/8/2008 by Scott Weinberg at Cinematical
Filed under: Fan RantMy good friend Erik Childress runs a year-round column called Criticwatch, and it's there that he hopes to let you know (based only on their own words) which film critics are worthy of your trust ... and which film critics are blatant "quote whores" who do nothing besides blindly shill for the studios' latest offerings, regardless of how unquestionably wretched the movies may be. The generally-accepted "King of the Hos" is "Wireless Magazine's" mega-mysterious Earl Dittman, but Earl's taken a bit of a holiday over the past few years, which gave Maxim's Pete Hammond the chance to ...
Film Critic Punished For Whoring?
Published 1/8/2008 by karina at SpoutBlog
eFilmCritic has compiled their annual Criticwatch list, designed to shame the most offensive quote whores in film criticism, and they’ve given top honors for “an incredible amount of supercilious douchebaggery” to Pete Hammond, the MAXIM critic whose reliably, absurdly positive blurbs appeared on a whopping 88 film campaigns in 2007. Hammond, a Criticwatch veteran from way back, has long been considered to have few peers in the quote whoring game. As Erik Childress writes:
Hammond is more than just a cancer on the film critic profession. He’s the poster boy for everything that’s wrong with an American media preaching to ...
Pete Hammond Gets Fired from Maxim
Published 1/9/2008 at RopeofSilicon: Latest Headlines
I have to apologize for what I am about to write up because taking joy in the firing of another individual is a terrible thing to do and I don't particularly feel good about it, but according to Radar Online Maxim magazine's quote whore, douche critic Pete Hammond has been fired. It seems Radar also wasn't a huge fan of Hammond saying, "Hammond, as has been noted elsewhere, was pretty much the definition of a 'tool' in his capacity at Maxim, where he continually gave universally decried flicks glowing reviews in order to get his name splashed across newspaper ads." Radar also points out the next needless critics that needs to get the shaft saying, "At least studios ...
The News: Blurb Whore Honored, Mourned
Published 1/9/2008 at The Reeler
By S.T. VanAirsdale Some of today's movie news of note from around New York: --If you think this site's Top 10 of Top 10 Lists are mean, nasty, overwrought or just plain stupid, do not visit my spiritual cousin Erik Childress at eFilmCritic, who has exhaustively compiled his annual list of the top 10 Blurb Whores in contemporary criticism . At the top of the list: "Michael Medved Bag of Douche Memorial Award Winner" Pete Hammond, the Maxim hack whose offenses Childress has tracked for a while now and who we learn (via SpoutBlog ) was unceremoniously shitcanned for his efforts. "At least he’s got a parting gift with that big ol' bag of douche on ...
Pete Hammond’s Firing a Must-See Extravaganza! It’s Simply Stunning in Its Brilliance!
Published 1/9/2008 by Cameron Archer at Film School Rejects
Notoriety is a funny thing. Some people become known for redefining the boundaries of a certain profession, like with Andy Kaufman’s personal definition of “comedy.” Some gain infamy through schadenfreude, the main reason why people talk about Britney Spears and Michael Jackson. Peter Hammond’s claim to fame is that he liked, or pretended to like, a lot of bad films.
According to Radar Online, Hammond was just recently fired from his job at Maxim as part of a housecleaning exercise by its new editor-in-chief Jim Kaminsky. During his tenure at Maxim, Hammond made a name for himself by attaching words like “must-see” and ...
Maxim Is Sorry for Making Music Lovers Question Its Non-Existant Credibility
Published 2/26/2008 by david at Jossip
It had all the makings of a genius publicity stunt … that went horribly wrong and is now now subject to raging backlash. But Maxim, in printing in its March issue a review of the Black Crowes’ album Warpaint even though the critic, David Peisner, never listened to it (since advance copies weren’t made available), didn’t mean to generate any press by issuing 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Now, incoming editorial director James Kaminsky finds himself apologizing for the gaff after the Crowes, their manager Pete Angelus, and fans, began complaining. (Maxim initially responded to Angelus that the review was an ...
