Published 4/29/2008 at FilmWad

The film that will bring him out of semi-retirement will be "Edge of Darkness" scripted by William Monahan ("The Departed") and directed by Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale"). "Darkness" is based on a six-hour miniseries made by Campbell himself back in 1985 for the BBC. The (considerably shortened) film will focus on "a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case and uncovers systemic corruption that led to his ...

News from Variety is that Martin Campbell will direct the film, having also directed the mini series. Are you happy to see Gibson taking on acting roles, or do you prefer him behind the camera?

Does Gibson Matter?
Published 4/29/2008 at Hollywood Elsewhere
Does Gibson Matter? Mel Gibson isn't Mel Gibson any more . The last time "that guy" appeared in a film was What Women Want . Since the Malibu DUI arrest he's gotten too heavy and thin of hair to be an attractive box-office draw. To me he'll always be the bearded wacko in the flannel shirt with a shave. The upside is that Edge of Darkness , an adaptation of a six-hour BBC miniseries, has been written by William Monaghan ( The Departed ) and will be directed by Martin Campbell .

Mel Gibson Returning To Big Screen
After his drunken, anti-Semitic tirade, Mel Gibson looked like he’d never work in Tinsel Town again. But he’s baaaack, and ironically enough this time he’s playing a cop in Edge of Darkness.
The film is an adaptation of a 1985 BBC mini-series and will have the same director, Martin Campbell, whose last project was Casino Royale.
Gibson will be playing a straight-laced cop who investigates his daughter’s murder, uncovering systemic police corruption in the process.
