Them Coachella Kids #3 - MGMT
Pretty Much Amazing! —
WHO: MGMT [[ myspace // website // last.fm ]] WHAT: MGMT (formerly known as The Management) is an American musical group based in Brooklyn, New York consisting of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden. Goldwasser and VanWyngarden formed the band while attending Wesleyan University during their freshman year in December 2002. They experimented with noise rock and electronica before settling on what David Marchese of Spin magazine calls “their current brand of shape-shifting psychedelic pop.” They graduated in 2005 and toured extensively in support of the Time ...

Pitchfork Media - Today —
... Day at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg, but it wasn't all thanks to Cupid. Instead, the borough's own cherubs of percussion-heavy, worldbeat-leaning, kitchen sink pop Yeasayer were spreading the love found on All Our Cymbals and helping showgoers' ventricles sync up with the quartet's infectious rhythms. And, of course, dodging projectile candy hearts all the while.
Also on-hand for the love-in: fellow Brooklynites MGMT and Chairlift, who all joined Yeasayer later in the set ...

Sometimes a band's energy doesn't fully sink in until you're allowed more time to dive back into their catalog, or to listen to that one track that really surprised you live 25 times (or more) on shuffle, or to check out other YouTube videos of the band playing live, or try to figure out what cover they ended with, etc.
For the Yeasayer and MGMT double-bill, double-show two Fridays ago at Schubas in Chicago, I chose to put off ...

They talk about it as if it’s all inevitable, like the rough side of fame is something they have to live through: There’s really nothing, nothing we can do Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew. The models will have children, we’ll get a divorce We’ll find some more models, everything must run it’s course. Of all the bands listed in the ‘Sound Of 2008′ poll, MGMT might be one of the first that actually seem to be worth the hype. Check out their ...

... follow-up, Mission Control, is refreshingly no sophomore slump. Parker Gispert holds his guitar high, legs flailing, rocking back and forth. Julian Dorio pounds the drums, sticks splintering and his hair swirling this way and that. Since their first release, they've found a new bassist and another truely nice guy (and eye-candy according to MJ) in Tim Deaux. Little known fact: Hank Sullivant, the original bassist for The Whigs, is now part of the band MGMT. The Whigs : Like A Vibration live at Hot Freaks! : ...
News: Of Montreal's Barnes, MGMT Guy Team as Blikk Fang?
Pitchfork Media - Today —
They say familiarity breeds contempt, but for tourmates Of Montreal and MGMT, it would appear to have spawned collaboration. So say hello to Blikk Fang, the apparent new thang from Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes and MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden, according to a Chocolate Bobka report (not yet confirmed by either band's camp).
"Experimental" thrice over if we can believe their Pure Volume page, Blikk Fang allegedly have an EP entitled Aveh Tiger Roma (that's the cover ...

... New York magazine profiles MGMT.
The creation of MGMT is a story of ambition taking shape fitfully, with apathy, bong hits, and graduate school looming at every turn. Andrew VanWyngarden from Memphis and Ben Goldwasser from upstate New York met as freshmen at Wesleyan and mucked around in various bands, eventually producing a six-song EP and touring in a pickup truck. Their songs had a strong sixties vibe, groovy numbers that merged glam and psychedelia, driven by keyboard riffs and heavily layered falsetto vocals. ...

Beck Kicks Off Modern Guilt Tour Tonight in Reno
Pitchfork Media - Today —
... August 21, in the biggest little city in the world, the planet's biggest little funkateer (who isn't Prince), Beck, will embark on the first leg of his two-part North American tour. The jaunt sees Beck staying awfully close to the West Coast through the rest of August. When he picks back up again in mid-September, he'll bring the noise (and also, presumably, the funk) to a wide swath of the rest of the continent. Hot young things MGMT will support on a good portion of the dates. Of course, none of ...

Time to Pretend, MGMT 'This is our decision, to live fast and die young/We've got the vision, now let's have some fun,' sang Andrew VanWyngarden with dreamy insouciance on this satire on – or paean to? – rock's most shameful excesses. When he wrote the track with Ben Goldwasser in 2004, both were two wide-eyed Wesleyan college kids in Connecticut. As it turns out, Time to Pretend (originally titled The Mantis Sailing Home) proved less the in-joke and more a prophetic heralding of their future. Genre-blending psych-pop, the track became a freakbeat theme ...

By the time we get to the first single from the album, track 4 The Reeling, it becomes obvious that Passion Pit are more than just a solid pop band. Before MGMT were gallivanting around the world as festival headliners and hanging out with Bill Murray, they were just another two students from Wesleyan University with huge boners for the eminently excellent proto-electro group Suicide. That influence didn't really come through on Oracular Spectacular but it did on their first record, the Time To Pretend EP, originally released through Cantora Records in 2005. Cantora, who also championed early music from Violens and ...

Rock En Seine Day Three: Sunday 30th Of August
Cougar Microbes are marching in like army ants... —
... MGMT seem to be the band every Parisien kid has been waiting to see judging by the size of the massive audience that is flowing under the main stage. Bohemian clothes and fluorescent face paint are very much a must for the next performance. In the build up to this festival I was thinking their album has such a distinctive studio sound to it that it could potentially sound hollow played live. ... D.A.N.C.E., a nod to the French masters who rocked the island last year. The set left something to be desired, however. Alternating between high, intense bangers and oddly mellow numbers, the set wasn t very cohesive. They did close with a remix of Queen s Bohemian Rhapsody, which turned into a huge sing-along and was an ode to the late DJ A.M. (rest his soul) who would frequently spin the song in his sets. ... Roxy Music,” Banhart indulges in 70’s disco rock. Loaded with fat analog synthesizers and a rock-solid disco beat, Banhart and his choir yelp “Tonight, we’re gonna find our lovers/tonight, we’re gonna find our man!” As the title alludes to, there is a nod to Roxy Music’s arty sway and bop; Bryan Ferry would be right at home singing lead on the track. MGMT could cover the song and a lot of people would probably assume it was the latest, hottest MGMT single, tailor-made for Urban Outfitters’ in-store playlists across the globe. And ...
