The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner was a rousing success last night thanks to the funny one liners of Barack Obama and John McCain. The formal white tie affair is a fundraiser for Catholic Charities. Last years event amassed $3.8 million.
The candidates poked fun at themselves and each other with self deprecating humor. It was a break from political attacks and talk of the bad economy. Instead of political punches, the pair exchanged punchlines.

Nathan Bedford Forest High School has been embroiled in a push by many to change the name of the Jacksonville Florida facility. The Duval County School Board held a three hour hearing last night and then voted 5-2 to keep the name of the early Ku Klux Klan leader, who was Grand Wizard, first era.
The school was established in 1950 and was all white at that time. The name was chosen by the Daughters of the Confederacy, who saw it as a protest to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that eventually integrated the nation’s public schools. McCain’s camp conceded victory to Fox News just after 10:00 p.m. saying there was “no clear path to victory” after a loss in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
McCain addressed his supporters and the nation at 11:18 p.m. ET and said he had called Obama to congratulate him on his win.

Perhaps First Dog Barney is upset with the outcome of the presidential election or was just having a bad morning. In a case of bad doggy manners, the Scottish terrier took a nip out of a member of the White House press corps today.
Reuters political reporter Jon Decker had just wrapped up a piece for MSNBC at 10:30 a.m. and was heading back to the pressroom when he saw First Dog Barney on the lawn with his custodian. The reporter asked permission to pet the pooch and was promptly rewarded with a snap and snarl.
