Nicolas Cage, Werner Herzog to Remake "Bad Lieutenant"
FilmWad —
I don't think I've ever questioned Werner Herzog, one of my heroes both as a filmmaker and as a man, but I can't see the logic behind remaking Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lietenant" only sixteen years after it first came out. Less surprisingly, Nicolas Cage will play the title role that was created by the legendary Harvey Keitel. Edward R. Pressman seems to be the guiltiest party of the lot as he produced the original film and will perform the same function for the remake (Variety). The original film, rated NC-17, concerned an NYC cop who becomes heavily involved in "drugs, gambling, sex, and stealing." The new screenplay will be ...
Werner Herzog's BAD LIEUTENANT remake? Double-You Tee Eff?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. What the shit is going down at Cannes? Why is every single report coming out of Cannes feeling like an April Fools joke? Seriously. Point Break sequel? Donnie Darko sequel focusing on Donnie's little sister? Werner Herzog remaking BAD LIEUTENANT with Nicolas Cage in the Harvey Keitel role ? WTF?!? These aren't jokes, people. These are real projects. Is this the first American film from the '90s that's being remade? I know we can point to any number of Asian films from the '90s and '00s being remade, but this is the first I can think of that's American to American from that decade. Can you count reboots like THE ...

Hello, all! I hope you're feeling fine this morning. Last night I ate some hot wings, read a book and tried to watch a few minutes of American Idol but was too frightened by a small Hobbit child singing Dan Fogelberg 's Longer to continue. That show is creepier than ever this season! Your breakfast headlines: - Some sad news: Artist Robert Rauschenberg has died ...

Nicolas Cage Is a ‘Bad Lieutenant,’ Too

... Herzog Feeling Bad: Nicolas Cage will star in an updated remake of 1992's Bad Lieutenant, with Werner Herzog directing. The original movie starred Harvey Keitel as a New York police officer who was big into drugs, gambling, stealing, sex, and movies with NC-17 ratings. Maybe in this version the producers will actually clear the music rights so they don't have to cut huge chunks of the soundtrack. [Variety]
Point Break, Too: Speaking of ridiculous updates of early-nineties ...
Werner Herzog To Remake The Bad Lieutenant With The Bad Actor

Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant. Trade Roughage 05/14/08

You know how sometimes, things happen and you can’t really believe they’re happening, and you wonder if maybe you’re in a dream, or if maybe the universe folded in on itself and you got caught in some kind of warp in space and time that allows things to happen that wouldn’t be allowed on an ordinary plane? Um. Werner Herzog is remaking Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant. With Nicolas Cage in the Harvey Keitel role.
Tommy Lee Jones will “adapt, direct, produce and star” in a feature based on Ernest Hemmingway’s Islands in the Stream.

Nicolas Cage and Werner Herzog to Team Up For Either Best or Worst Remake Ever [Police Beat]
Gawker: Defamer —
... wanted a stunt penis, but Herzog, in his stern Bavarian accent, scolded Cage repeatedly: "No, no, no, Nic. That is cowardly and stupid. If Kinski were here..." At which point noted schlock producer Avi Lerner showed up out of nowhere to intercede on his director's behalf, reminding Cage that if Jason Segel could do it, then an Oscar winner could as well — ratings be damned.
So imagine our shock, surprise and revulsion this morning as our bleary eyes first browsed Variety: Nicolas Cage will star in an updated version of 1992's ...

The results of it can be seen in the recent slaughtering of Speed Racer by the likes of a majority vote at Rotten Tomatoes (and many others aside), while the start of it, I think, can be seen in the kind of slandering going on right now at The House Next Door as regards the recently announced remake of Abel Ferrara's ...
"I'm Dead Center": Interview with Oscar Nominee Werner Herzog
All these wonderful things —
On Friday, as torrential rain storms were hitting Los Angeles, we talked by phone with legendary filmmaker and first-time Oscar nominee (for ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD ) Werner Herzog, about his recent work and the perception that his longtime questioning of documentary "standards" has made him somewhat of an outsider in the documentary community. Since his much lauded, Antarctica documentary feature, Herzog has directed two narrative films - a new version (not a remake, all insist) of BAD LIEUTENANT ...
