News: Jonny Greenwood's Blood Score Denied Oscar Nod?
Published 1/21/2008 by Matthew Solarski at Pitchfork Media - Today
Just when we thought Jonny Greenwood pretty much had it made after this whole Radiohead thing blows over, along comes this little setback. According to a report from Los Angeles Times' The Envelope, Greenwood's much-feted, 8.1-earning score for Paul Thomas Anderson oilman flick There Will Be Blood will not be eligible for an Academy Award nomination this year. Those noms will be announced tomorrow morning, and until this development many expected Greenwood's score would easily ...

Holy shit. That's all I have to say. I'll have an official list up today, but I'll talk a bit about what happened now. BEST DIRECTOR: A definite surprise was Jason Reitman nominated for best Director for Juno. His directing was damn good, but worthy of an Oscar? Better than Ridley Scott for American Gangster? Another bigger surprise in the direction category was Joe Wright who was, unfortunately, not nominated for Atonement. BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE: Cate Blanchett managed to snag a nomination for her role as Queen Elizabeth. ...

The sole fly in the ointment, inevitably, is the presence of the over-praised Atonement - its inclusion presumably at the expense of Tim Burton's terrific Sweeney Todd. Which just goes to show that you can't have everything. Taken as a whole, this year's nominations up-end the age-old prejudice that the Oscars , as well as being the biggest film awards, are also the most conservative. I've lost count of the number of articles I've read informing me that Atonement was a sure-fire Oscar winner because ...

Five Oscar Wins That Shaped the Movies
Published 2/19/2008 by Scott Kirsner at CinemaTech
Looking back at the history of the Academy Awards , you can pinpoint five Oscar wins that were central to the evolution of the movie industry, altering the way movies are made by directors and experienced by audiences. Technological innovation, in my opinion, not only created the movies, but insured that the art form would remain an important part of American culture over more than a century. So, in chronological order. 1. At the first Academy Awards ceremony, held in 1929, Warner Bros. received a special award for producing 'The Jazz Singer,' "which has revolutionized the ...

Just a few weeks ago it looked as though the 80th annual Academy Awards might well be scuppered by the US writers' strike and that the ceremony would be mothballed in favour of a utilitarian press conference. This would have allowed the Guardian's film team to roll in early on the Monday morning, cobble together a quick news story and then zip off to catch a press screening of the new Hannah Montana movie. Can you name a film where a coffee shop, restaurant, meal or snack doesn’t make at least a brief appearance? I can’t. ...
