“A Christmas Carol” wins the weekend, but “Precious” gets the early Xmas cheer

Robert Zemeckis and Disney’s new CGI “A Christmas Carol” was pretty much destined to take the weekend, and it did with an estimated tally of $31 million. However, Nikki Finke noted that the film was expected to make, she says, at least $4 million more. I am inclined to think that the word that this version of Dicken’s holiday classic might be too scary for very young viewers might have given this entry a bit of a winter chill.
Variety, however, added insult to injury and the #1 movie found itself a subhead on its opening weekend. The trade paper of record instead led with the record-breaking ...

... While “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” was the top film at the box office over the weekend, it was Lionsgate’s “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” that was the true winner grabbing a record $1.8 million at only 18 runs in the U.S. That averages to $100,000 per screen, a record for a film opening in under 50 theaters. ...
Weekend Box Office: We Need A Little “Christmas”
At The Movies - Film News and Reviews —
I think we can all agree with Scrooge that early November is no time for Christmas movies.
And the numbers (courtesy of Variety):
1. Disney’s A Christmas Carol $31,000,000
2. Michael Jackson’s This Is It $14,000,000
3. The Men Who Stare At Goats $13,309,000
4. The Fourth Kind $12,521,285
5. Paranormal Activity $8,600,000
You know, Variety says that “A Christmas Carol,” though it won the weekend easily, actually came in on the low end of box office expectations. I actually am surprised it did $31 million. I mean, it’s the first weekend in ...
My Precious : Indie Film Breaks Box-Office Records [Film Schooled]

[image] Disney's creepy 3D Christmas Carol was number one at the box office, but the big movie biz story today is Precious ' record-setting debut over the weekend As Women & Hollywood's Melissa Silverstein writes: It made $1.8 million dollars on a total of 18 screens. That is an average of $100,000 per screen which never, ever happens. A little perspective. Michael Jackson's movie This is It opened to 6,675 per screen average. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince opened at 17,997 per screen. Granted people had a lot more places to see both movies and both grossed more for the weekend, but Precious' debut is unprecedented. The only ...
