Richard Kelly Launches Darko Entertainment
Published 9/17/2007 by Monika Bartyzel at Cinematical
Filed under: Deals, NewsstandIt's just about time to see if Richard Kelly's Southland Tales was made into anything worth seeing. As we all know by now, the Cannes crowd hated it when it was first screened, damage control claimed that it was unfinished, and Kelly then re-edited it into the version that will be released on November 9. Now the filmmaker is focusing on work beyond the Tales, and Variety is reporting that he has joined his producing partner Sean McKittrick and financier Ted Hamm to form his own production company -- ...
Cameron Diaz' New Horror Movie To Start
Published 9/17/2007 by Harold Goldberg at Horror Hacker
Cameron Diaz (left in The Holiday) is set to star in Richard Kelly's The Box when it starts shooting in Virginia and Massachusetts on November 17th. Kelly, best known for the cult hit Donnie Darko, is riffing on Richard Matheson's "Button, Button" story. It's actually been done before - as a Twilight Zone episode!
Matheson, if you don't know, is one of Stephen King's heroes, a man who's called by King "the man who's influenced me most as a writer." Says IMDB of ...

Trailer: Southland Tales (finally)
Published 9/20/2007 at Cinema Fusion
The trailer for the much-delayed, Cannes-reviled, hotly anticipated follow-up from Donnie Darko auteur, Richard Kelly, Southland Tales is finally online. Apparently, the final cut is vastly different and altered from the nearly three hour version that was screened at Cannes, two years ago (where it received an average viewer rating of 1.1 out of 5). Here are a few instant reactions. First, Justin Timberlake continues to choose very dark film roles (Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan) and raises the ...

IFC News, part the first.

This is only a partial IFC News update for the week; we'll post the rest when it goes up tomorrow and we're back in the office.
Richard Kelly! The "Donnie Darko" director was at the Apple Store in Soho this past Friday for an indieWIRE event moderated by critic Dennis Lim in which he talked about what's incontestably one of the most batshit insane (and by our own estimation, also one of the finest) films of the year — "Southland Tales." A video of footage from the discussion and an interview Kelly did afterward with our ...

In the works: David O. Russell's follow-up to "I Heart Huckabees" (as if that's an act that could ever be followed) will likely be "Nailed," a "risque political satire" co-written by Al Gore's daughter, Kristin Gore. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel, apparently not big browsers of YouTube, are attached to star. Biel will play an awkward small-town receptionist who becomes a nympho after getting shot in the head with a nail gun, and who then heads to D.C. [Hollywood Reporter]

Review: Southland Tales
Published 11/16/2007 at Cinema Fusion
... I have various friends in the scientific community who have their own personal stories on how any number of sci-fi films are impossible for them to enjoy because the science is so ridiculous that they can’t help but being drawn away from the story and focus on the inconsistencies. I’ve always written them off as overzealous, Star Wars hating, uber-nerds and paid their opinions little mind. But then I watched Richard Kelly’s new film ...

Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly is currently out filming his third film, The Box, which follows Southland Tales, his second effort that was quickly forgotten. This one stars James Marsden and Cameron Diaz as the lead married couple and Frank Langella as the mysterious man who delivers the box. Quite an impressive cast so far, and that's not all that looks good about this. The inspiration for this is the classic story as told ...

Plagued by bizarre hallucinatory dreams warning her of the universe’s eminent end, Sam must face the demons she has fled back home, and learn the true meaning of family and friendship, and in doing so, save both herself and the world. Now some of that rings true from the first. Meteorite instead of plane engine, the reference to the apparent end of the world. It all seems a bit clunky to me though, Richard Kelly must be seething. What about you, does this make you feel any better? Or are you ...

Not only that, but they aren't willing to leave the first one alone: We just come back [in time] and change what happened in the first one. ... Yet even in his first film, Darko's director Richard Kelly was already displaying a Tarantino-esque cleverness with his casting decisions. His next film, Southland Tales, would basically implode and explode at the same time from Kelly's "Throw a week's worth of VH1 programming into a blender and call it a movie" aesthetic, but the scope was kept small enough, with just the right amount of quirk, in Donnie Darko for it to feel just right. ...
