Festival Acclaim vs. Commercial Prospects

One of the most difficult parts of my job as an acquisitions manager is to distinguish festival acclaim from commercial viability . There's a buzz in the air; a feeling that the next screening you attend just might be something truly memorable and special. Why? There's a few reasons, but the two that resonate most with me are: 1. Festival attendees by definition are more open to new/different/experimental films - that's why they are there.... Every audience is full of true movie ...

Making the Most of South by Southwest

I have somehow survived my eighth year of South by Southwest, the huge four-day music festival in Austin, Texas, where more than thousand bands descend on the city, playing official and unofficial showcases, day and night. They’ve come a long way to sing for you. I was also on a mission to cover the softer side of SXSW. Raucous indie bands get all the attention, but I found a bunch of mellow songwriters that I’ll be enjoying in ...

Reckless Kelly Still Excited About SXSW
Published 3/20/2008 by Nazz at CMT Blog
... We've been fortunate enough to live in the city that hosts South by Southwest for over 10 years. We've experienced it in many capacities as we've played it, seen shows during it, and hosted some of the best four-day late night parties the town can offer. For those of you who have been to the Shed behind our old house, you know that it was the one place that served you a drink when you didn't need one and refused to play anything else other than vinyl. ...

... Apparently they named the album after the rare condition Synesthesia… “It’s a mixture of senses that may cause a person to experience colorful hearing, auditory smell,” Shay explained. “For example, you might see something, and it might trigger a song. You might hear something, and it might trigger a taste in your mouth. When we created this album, it was the music we envisioned while creating it. We decided it would be the appropriate title for the album.” During the legendary SXSW festival Pharrell spoke a little more about the actual album though… “If you really analyze ...

SXSW 2008 | South By Southwest's Most Valuable Player
Published 3/27/2008 by Sam at Live Music Blog
... Before heading down to Austin, I had no idea what to expect from South By Southwest. I've been to a few festivals, but from everything I had heard, SXSW was an entirely different animal. Bonnaroo always seemed like it had a lot of bands, but this festival boasted over 1,500 acts. All reports I read prior told me the city of Austin basically shuts down, and hoards of musicians, fans, bloggers and industry insiders rove the streets in search of the next band worthy of internet hype. ...

Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers Forge Ahead
Published 4/17/2008 by Craig Shelburne at CMT Blog
Of all the bands I saw at South by Southwest last month, I have to say that Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers put on the most energetic show. I already liked their album before I got to Austin, so I figured I'd go and give them a good write-up - only to find the bar so crowded up front that I could barely get in. Here's a video that they just put out too, called "Sweetest Goodbye." (Either JavaScript is not active or you are using an old version of Adobe Flash Player. Please install the ...

Fresh off its premiere at the 2008 South by Southwest Film Festival, The Matador has been scooped up by City Lights Pictures. Directed by Nina Gilden Seavey, the bullfighting documentary tracked David Fandila for three years in his quest to become the world’s top matador. This looks like a great doc for the 2008 Traverse City Film Festival. Are you listening, Michael Moore? Image: The Matador, South by Southwest Film Festival, 2008 ...

Mayer’s Playlist for March/April, Part 2
Published 5/16/2008 by Mayer Danzig at Twangville
ALBUMS OF THE MONTH: On a Clear Night, by Missy Higgins The first thing that you’ll notice about Australia’s Missy Higgins is her stunning voice, a magical blend of confidence and uneasiness. Opening track “Where I Stood” epitomizes this dichotomy. The song captures the moment where a woman realizes that, despite her emotional attachment to her lover, has become too ingrained in the relationship and needs to re-discover her identify. Set against a plaintive piano, Higgins vocals – and her lyrics – perfectly ...

Listen Up: Nakia & His Southern Cousins
Published 5/27/2008 by Mayer Danzig at Twangville
In a small room off the beaten path at this year’s SXSW I found a big voice. Austin singer-songwriter Nakia took possession of the room that night, his rich and brawny voice shifting effortlessly from a soulful ballad to a R&B rave-up. Ably backed by his top-notch band the Southern Cousins, it was a highlight of the conference. Once back in Boston the ep that I picked up that night sat on my desk for a few weeks. All too often a thrilling live performer can’t capture the magic in the studio and I wanted some time to savor the memory of that special show. When I finally put the ep in the ...

Listen Up: The Teenage Prayers’ “Everyone Thinks You’re the Best”
Published 6/5/2008 by Mayer Danzig at Twangville
Imagine a soul band playing CBGB’s and you’ll have a sense of the Prayer’s sound. The Brooklyn-based group serves up a potent blend of soul and hard rock that will get you dancing until you collapse from exhaustion. Opener “I Like It” sets the tone with a smoldering intro that builds into an angst-ridden beat. “I like it but I don’t like you,” wails singer Tim Adams like a man possessed before the guitars kick in with a sonic blast. This is a band intent on taking no prisoners. The band’s soulful side steos out on the subsequent “I’ll Never Let You Go” and “I’m in Love Again.” The former ...

Is NXNE the new SXSW?
Published 6/16/2008 by Caspar Llewellyn Smith at Guardian Unlimited: Arts blog - music
... , Yukon Cigar and Shit La Merde, that last a nod to Canada's multilingualism. Not that there seemed to be a particular buzz about any of these at NXNE, but an intriguing name is as good as any come-on when faced with over 400 acts in the course of three nights. Could NXNE be the new South By Southwest ? Every year what seems like the entire British music industry decamps to Austin, Texas, for SXSW and the search for the latest breakthrough bands. But given that Main Street on Saturday night could well be mistaken for Camden Town come chucking out time, what hope is there for ...

One of the first shows I caught when I got to San Francisco was the Apollo Sunshine / Big Light show that I opted to see instead of Fleet Foxes, which I'm still torn on whether or not that decision will haunt me for the rest of my life considering that Fleet Foxes are like, huge now. But the Apollo Sunshine show was seriously tight; the new stuff this band was kicking out just had me so mesmerized and awestruck that I've long waited for their new album to get released so I can get a taste of the songs again. Their Archive page hasn't gotten much love in a while and this ...

Written by Glen Stansberry When it comes to CSS, there are lots of resources and supposed “expert tips” on the web. These are from unproven, self-proclaimed “gurus” who have no street cred in the design world. While they may have valid points, how is one to know whether a CSS tip is a valid resource or just an untested hack? Instead of relying on unknown sources for advice, let’s look deeply into designers who have excellent design backgrounds and have walked the walk. These CSS tips are gathered from some of the most respected designers on the ...

Yet here is Sweet returning from an extended solo hiatus to reinvigorate us with his inspired blend of ...
