Festival Acclaim vs. Commercial Prospects

One of the most difficult parts of my job as an acquisitions manager is to distinguish festival acclaim from commercial viability . There is a definite feel at a film fest - those of you who are fortunate enough to attend a few know what I'm talking about. There's a buzz in the air; a feeling that the next screening you attend just might be something truly memorable and special. Why? There's a few reasons, but the two that resonate most with me are: 1. Festival attendees by definition are more open to new/different/experimental films - that's why they are there.... Every audience is full of true movie ...

Making the Most of South by Southwest

I have somehow survived my eighth year of South by Southwest, the huge four-day music festival in Austin, Texas, where more than thousand bands descend on the city, playing official and unofficial showcases, day and night. This year, I decided to find international bands with a country music influence. That’s my first tip for first-timers -- go check out a band from the U.K. or Australia. They’ve come a long way to sing for you. I was also on a mission to cover the softer side of SXSW. Raucous indie bands get all the attention, but I found a bunch of mellow songwriters that I’ll be enjoying in ...

The first thing that you’ll notice about Australia’s Missy Higgins is her stunning voice, a magical blend of confidence and uneasiness. Opening track “Where I Stood” epitomizes this dichotomy. The song captures the moment where a woman realizes that, despite her emotional attachment to her lover, has become too ingrained in the relationship and needs to re-discover her identify. Set against a plaintive piano, Higgins vocals – and her lyrics – perfectly ...
Listen Up: Nakia & His Southern Cousins
Twangville —
In a small room off the beaten path at this year’s SXSW I found a big voice. Austin singer-songwriter Nakia took possession of the room that night, his rich and brawny voice shifting effortlessly from a soulful ballad to a R&B rave-up. Ably backed by his top-notch band the Southern Cousins, it was a highlight of the conference.
Once back in Boston the ep that I picked up that night sat on my desk for a few weeks. All too often a thrilling live performer can’t capture the magic in the studio and I wanted some time to savor the memory of that special show. When I finally put the ep in the ...
Listen Up: The Teenage Prayers’ “Everyone Thinks You’re the Best”
Twangville —
Imagine a soul band playing CBGB’s and you’ll have a sense of the Prayer’s sound. The Brooklyn-based group serves up a potent blend of soul and hard rock that will get you dancing until you collapse from exhaustion.
Opener “I Like It” sets the tone with a smoldering intro that builds into an angst-ridden beat. “I like it but I don’t like you,” wails singer Tim Adams like a man possessed before the guitars kick in with a sonic blast. This is a band intent on taking no prisoners.
The band’s soulful side steos out on the subsequent “I’ll Never Let You Go” and “I’m in Love Again.” The former ...
Is NXNE the new SXSW?
Music: Music blog | guardian.co.uk —
... , Yukon Cigar and Shit La Merde, that last a nod to Canada's multilingualism. Not that there seemed to be a particular buzz about any of these at NXNE, but an intriguing name is as good as any come-on when faced with over 400 acts in the course of three nights. Could NXNE be the new South By Southwest ? Every year what seems like the entire British music industry decamps to Austin, Texas, for SXSW and the search for the latest breakthrough bands. But given that Main Street on Saturday night could well be mistaken for Camden Town come chucking out time, what hope is there for ...

One of the first shows I caught when I got to San Francisco was the Apollo Sunshine / Big Light show that I opted to see instead of Fleet Foxes, which I'm still torn on whether or not that decision will haunt me for the rest of my life considering that Fleet Foxes are like, huge now. But the Apollo Sunshine show was seriously tight; the new stuff this band was kicking out just had me so mesmerized and awestruck that I've long waited for their new album to get released so I can get a taste of the songs again. Their Archive page hasn't gotten much love in a while and this ...
10 Principles of the CSS Masters
The Best Article Every day —
Written by Glen Stansberry
When it comes to CSS, there are lots of resources and supposed “expert tips” on the web. These are from unproven, self-proclaimed “gurus” who have no street cred in the design world. While they may have valid points, how is one to know whether a CSS tip is a valid resource or just an untested hack?
Instead of relying on unknown sources for advice, let’s look deeply into designers who have excellent design backgrounds and have walked the walk. These CSS tips are gathered from some of the most respected designers on the ...

ALBUMS OF THE MONTH:
Sunshine Lies, by Matthew Sweet
“’cause we’re already good and we’re already evil, unfazed by a world of constant upheaval,” sings Matthew Sweet on “Let’s Love” from his latest release. It’s a moment that carries meaning beyond the song’s intended topic. In the nearly fifteen years since Sweet’s seminal Girlfriend, the music business – and the world for that matter – has changed. Yet here is Sweet returning from an extended solo hiatus to reinvigorate us with his inspired blend of ...

Langerado 2009 Dates Announced, Venue Changed
Live Music Blog.com —
... I think of the start of the music festival season, and next year’s festival and unofficial start to the ‘09 season will be held March 6-8 the week before South by Southwest which means there’s a slight chance I could try to hit both of these festivals. I mean, I should try to be realistic and understand that I’m going to putting a lot of energy into SXSW this next year (more on that soon, hopefully!). But still, Langerado seems to be upping their game by moving back to a fan-friendly locale in Miami and promising a ton of fresh faces as part of the ...

My top 11 bands from CMJ
Pop Candy: Top Stories & Community Feed —
As you may know, I spent the last few days at the CMJ Music Marathon. Think of it as New York's version of South by Southwest , only it's bitterly cold, attracts more hipsters and there's no such thing as a free taco. I crammed as much music as I could into the festival, and I made a few delightful discoveries. (On the flip side, I also spent several hours waiting for late-night sets to start and saw a few ridiculous acts that you'll never hear about on this blog. But it's all part of the process!) In any case, here are my favorite bands of the bunch. By all means, hear their ...

... reason, they are the band formerly known as The Muslims. Their new title is The Soft Pack, which isn't nearly as controversial, but does make me want to go buy some cigarettes. Stereogum said they sound like Velvet Underground, the Strokes, Stooges and Replacements all rolled into one. Try out their 10-track vinyl release on 1928, and their 7'' single here. Something tells me you will be seeing The Muslims, err The Soft Pack, in Austin this March for SXSW. The Muslims - "Right and Wrong" ...

Duets, Rachel Yamagata featuring Ray Lamontagne (from the Warner Brothers release Elephants… Teeth Sinking Into Heart)
As sparse as it is breathtaking, this acoustic ballad finds two weary lovers quietly trying to reclaim a faded relationship. Yamagata and Lamontagne’s breathy vocals are a magical combination.

Sound and Vision: My Interview with Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit
Between Love and Like —
We made the following comment about Delta Spirit awhile back: They really are a barn burner of rock and soul. Delta Spirit will make you dance, lift your spirits, and reveal the beauteous sound that is the top to a metal trashcan. If you haven’t had the pleasure of attending a Delta Spirit show yet, it’s a lot like an old-timey church revival without the snake handling. Theirs is a stage full of energy, of singing, screaming, dancing, an organized chaos with multiple people playing multiple instruments, a fist full of, well, feeling. I've caught them twice in ...

SXSW Announces Partial Lineup
BAGeL Radio : indie rock noise pop internet radio —
I'm not sure what The 2009 South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) will be like, but it certainly won't be as busy and crowded and overflowing with bands as in previous years. In the face of a teetering economy looking frighteningly ready to to a Humpty Dumpty, many people have less money and job security, making it more difficult to take off the time required to make the trek to Texas. This is especially true for bands who mainly have to travel by auto, and who need to play in cities and towns along the way. No doubt many music lovering SXSW regulars will choose ...

I’m honestly happy for all the bands announcing that they’ll be playing at SXSW in March. Even think it’s quite understandable that they fill up my inbox with messages telling me this. SXSW 2009 Logo I ’ve always thought of SXSW as a film festival but in my local circuit, most folks are heading to Austin not to take in the movies (they’ll catch a movie if there’s time) but rather they’re making the pilgrimage for the tech portion of the festivities. Get Acquainted With : Black Eyes and Mi Ami
The Grizzly Life - A Music Blog For The Music Capital (And Beyond...) —
To start, I think we should take a look back at Washington D.C.'s defunct Black Eyes, not only because I think they are gigantically underrated, but also because knowing their background will help you grasp what has come out of the band, like Mi Ami. ...

SXSW 09: WFMU vs. AQUARIUS RECORDS and a Texas-Sized Pile of Live Acts
WFMU's Beware of the Blog —
(Pictured: the line for last year's Bruno Wizard backstage meet-and-greet) We had a total blast last March putting on and broadcasting our first ever bill at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. We got to host bands we loved, meet FMU listeners from all over the USA and beyond, and even Ice Cube and Bushwick Bill showed up in the crowd to watch some of the sets! Needless to say, the ante is now officially upped because we're going to co-curate 2009 with our good pals from Aquarius Records in San Francisco! AQ is truly one ...

Iran :: Dissolver
Muzzle of Bees | Music Blog: MP3 Downloads, Videos, News, Tour Dates, Giveaways —
If you follow me on Twitter you’re sure to be familiar with my current infatuation with Iran’s Dissolver. The album was released digitally this week and gets a proper physical release next week.
Led by Aaron Aites, whose vocals provide the most perfect overlay to some of Kyp Malone’s best guitar work to date. Pitchfork’s review yesterday came off a little salty and reluctant to let a band change things up a bit. The album is most certainly louder and more direct than the group’s previous output. ...

SXSW Rounds Out Line-Up; Blogger Wets Pants
Cinematical —
As it turns out, I lied to all of you last week when I said that next month's SXSW Film Festival had announced its full line-up -- and I couldn't have been happier. It looks like those awesome Austin-ites are bringing summer in March, specifically 500 Days of Summer, the one apparently adorable title I particularly pined for as a non-Sundance-ite. But wait! There's more! In addition to six picks from the Fantastic Fest crew that have yet to be announced (and are as eagerly awaited by yours truly as anything else), SXSW is bringing ...

Which of course means that now I can post up a bunch of tunes I otherwise would've gotten take down notices for. So here goes: ...

the torture garden —
... So, it's that time of year again. Journalists are booking flights and begging for passes, bands are scrambling for funding and writing modest biographies, and thousands of people go to see some of their favourite bands, and try their hardest to find a new one. I've picked some favourites to see (apart from the obvious bands - I'm assuming nobody needs telling to get to Grizzly Bear's show), including some Irish bands making the trip, like Fight Like Apes - pictured above getting messy at a phenomenal ...

It's about a father whose runaway daughter is found dead after appearing in a homemade porno flick, so he goes on a ruthless road trip of revenge. Only he didn't expect to pick up a young female hitchhiker along the way. (It's not a comedy.) For more info on these flicks, I refer you to post-jump and / or the official SXSW website. Free and legal MP3 from Ann Vriend (Kate Bush meets Nanci Griffith, in Canada)
Fingertips —
"St. Paul" - Ann Vriend Lastly this week I have another song that's been out in the world for a while, but unlike the previous two, this one has received next to no online attention to date. I pretty much stumbled upon it during my first run-through of the new SXSW MP3s. Serendipity rules. A singer/songwriter from Edmonton, Vriend has a voice that sounds a bit like Kate Bush doing a Nanci Griffith imitation (or maybe it's Nanci Griffith doing a Kate Bush imitation; I can never figure out which way to go with that sort of comparison). ...

Attention : SXSW Wristbands Now On Sale For Locals
The Grizzly Life - A Music Blog For The Music Capital (And Beyond...) —
If you aren't from here, you don't really need to read this. That's kind of the attitude the folks at SXSW are giving off when they make the first wristbands available to locals only (or at least those with a local credit card billing address). I understand the no scalping thing, but isn't that one of the downsides to a free market? Anyway, if you do have a local credit card billing address, $129 dollars, and want to purchase a wristband, the drawing is open now! Follow the link to get the process going.

EVR Music News: Power Pop Supergroup To Debut At SXSW

Among the 1800 or so bands at SXSW in Austin next month will be a power pop combo called Tinted Windows, who will be playing their first-ever live gig in advance of the release of their debut album later this spring. And who are the folks behind that genuinely rather awful band name? They're bassist Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne, Ivy and That Thing You Do! fame), guitarist James Iha (ex-Smashing Pumpkins and Schlesinger's partner in the indie label Scratchie Records), keyboardist and lead singer ...

Wrath of Khanna's Album of the Week: Shotgun Jimmie's Still Jimmie!
CBC Radio 3 —
Hello. It's Album of the Week time again and today's featured release is Still Jimmie by Sackville, New Brunswick's Shotgun Jimmie! After years making pretty quirky indie-rock on his own or with the dearly departed Shotgun & Jaybird, the multi-talented Jimmie has got a killer band to work with here, and he's made a really unhinged rock 'n' roll record with Still Jimmie, which was released yesterday. While you can still sense elements of lo-fi pioneers like Sebadoh, ...

Forgotten Music, Forgotten Films: "Festival Express"
The Screengrab —
Yesterday, in honor of the 2009 SXSW Festival (which starts today and runs through March 22), we posted our tribute to some our favorite music documentaries. Inevitably, a few choice items slipped through the cracks, one of which was Festival Express, a 2003 film that documents a traveling road show that shot through Canada in 1970. The idea was to stage rock shows in four locations: Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and unlucky Vancouver, which got scratched off the bill as a result of the city's Mayor and ...

Concert announcements from La Roux, A Camp, M Ward and more
.: chromewaves.net v7.5 —
MySpaceI’m just About hip-deep in Canadian Musicfest stuff at the moment and also trying desperately to get my SxSW junk together, but a handful of tasty concert announcements showed up yesterday and if I don’t get them out there now, who knows when I will.
I first noticed unabashedly ’80s-loving English electro-pop outfit La Roux when they showed up no small number of “next big things for ‘09″ lists at the start of the year. And while it’s still far too early to see if Elly Jackson and her interesting hair ...
