Travers on
Published 6/26/2008 at Hollywood Elsewhere
Travers on Warner Bros. publicity has given Rolling Stone 's Peter Travers an early-ish peek at The Dark Knight , and he's responded in his usual eager-beaver town-crier way, applying lotsa passion and saliva and goo-goo gah-gah. Knight may be a good or even great film, or at least be a wild slam-banger, but there's no trusting Travers. About anything. Especially when he's the first one out of the gate. "Heads up -- a thunderbolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies," he begins. " The Dark Knight , director Christopher Nolan 's absolute ...

... Rolling Stone's Pete Travers has gotten a sneak peek at Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (Warner, 7/18), and he pretty much creamed his critical pants. To wit : Heads up: a thunderbolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies. The Dark Knight, director Christopher Nolan's absolute stunner of a follow-up to 2005's Batman Begins, is a potent provocation decked out as a comic-book movie. Feverish action? Check. Dazzling spectacle? Check. Devilish fun? Check. But Nolan is just warming up. There's something raw and elemental at work in this artfully ...

First Dark Knight Review And Even More Video
Published 6/26/2008 at Cinema Blend News
First Dark Knight Review And Even More Video The first ever official review of The Dark Knight has popped up over at Rolling Stone , and it’s by Peter Travers. He seems to think it’s pretty good. Actually, he compares it to “a thunderbolt” which is “about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies.” I guess he didn’t see Kung Fu Panda . Travers 3.5/4 review is nothing short of glowing. He compares Bale’s performance to Al Pancino in Godfather II and layers on the superlatives in describing Heath Ledger’s Joker. He’s got the posthumous Oscar campaign up and ...

Summer Blockbuster Season: Distinctly Meh
Published 6/26/2008 at Radar: Fresh Intelligence Blog
Hopes are extremely high for tonight's New York City critics screening of Hancock , the Will Smith maybe-blockbuster in which he plays a disaffected, lonely, alcoholic superhero. Hopes are even higher for The Dark Knight , the latest Batman flick for which each new theatrical preview contains more and more Heath Ledger. (Each preview therefore also becomes more and more frightening; also, the first review is as glowing as you might hope .) This desperation arises because the rest of the summer fare has been distinctly so-so. Speed Racer and The Love Guru were ...

First 'Dark Knight' Review Says It's a Positive Metaphor
Published 6/26/2008 at I Watch Stuff - The Best Movie News Ever
... Travers has the first review of The Dark Knight, calling it "a thunderbolt about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies," and other favorable things. Good to know that all of the claims I made to my friends that this will be the definitive superhero movie probably won't make me look like a complete asshole this time, since I ended up being totally off when I said the same thing about Underdog. ... The Dark Knight reviews are pouring in thanks to early screenings. And they confirm it is the classic we were all all praying for. Let’s get the negatives (for some) out the way first: It is dark - the Joker is a boundless sadist, Two-Face horribly disfigured - so don’t take the family. And it’s over 2 hours long, so if you’ve got a short attention span then, well, you won’t have read this far anyway. No Spoilers Included: Rolling Stone: Heads up: a thunderbolt is about to rip into the blanket of ...

Warner Bros. has given Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers first crack at The Dark Knight and, unsurprisingly, he loved it: "Heads up: a thunderbolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies," he writes. "The haunting and visionary Dark Knight soars on the wings of untamed imagination. It's full of surprises you don't see coming. And just try to get it out of your dreams." In a three-and-a-half-star review, Travers raves pretty much about everything and campaigns for a posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger's final completed ...

Heath Ledger to be in another Batman movie?
Published 6/27/2008 by accidentalsexiness at Accidental Sexiness
Apparently producers of the new Batman The Dark Knight movie filmed enough footage of Heath Ledger to keep The Joker around for future productions. Will they do it? Only time will tell. This was one of Heath’s final movies before his untimely death in January. The end credits of the “Batman Begins” sequel include a farewell note to Ledger and to special-effects technician Conway Wickliffe, who was killed last September in a stunt-car accident. Rolling Stone was the first to review this film and it makes me wish it was opening this weekend! ...

... I am a bit concerned about the possible posthumous Oscar campaign though, especially after Peter Travers semi-officially got it off the ground last week. Since Ledger almost certainly wouldn't have had a shot at it for this role were he still alive, I'm afraid the notion of the "posthumous Oscar" would overwhelm his actual performance, which looks fantastic. ...

HEATH LEDGER is "mad-crazy-blazing brilliant" as the Joker!
Published 6/28/2008 at The Movie Fanatic Feeds
... Here's an excerpt of Traver's review : I can only speak superlatives of Ledger, who is mad-crazy-blazing brilliant as the Joker. Miles from Jack Nicholson's broadly funny take on the role in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, Ledger takes the role to the shadows, where even what's comic is hardly a relief. No plastic mask for Ledger; his face is caked with moldy makeup that highlights the red scar of a grin, the grungy hair and the yellowing teeth of a hound fresh out of hell. To the clown prince of crime, a knife is preferable to a gun, the better to "savor the moment." How's that ...

He goes on to say that Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker deserves the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch in Network. Actually, he just says that if there's a movement on behalf of Ledger, he wants to be signed up which is only kind of putting yourself out there. ...
