'The Dark Knight' is Not Perfect

... ), because I know some people will not like it as much as I did and I actually spoke to a couple of fellas from UK's Channel 4 that didn't like it already. However, I didn't think a truly negative review would hit the scenes that would tip the scales and take away Batman's Teflon RT rating, but that has all changed. New York Magazine 's David Edelstein has posted the first negative review , referring to the film in his opening graph saying, "[Then] the novelty wears off and the lack of imagination, visual and otherwise, turns into a drag. The First Negative Review of The Dark Knight
Published 7/14/2008 by orfilms@gmail.com (slashfilm.com) at /Film
... New York Magazine’s David Edelstein calls The Dark Knight “a morbid affair”, claiming that “It could only be darker if Batman died. (He does die a little, on the inside.)” And he is right, The Dark Knight is not Adam West’s Batman, it’s not Tim Burton’s Batman, it’s not even Frank Miller’s Batman. Edelstein comments that when Burton’s Batman came out critics complained that the film was too violent for kids. “Wait’ll they get a load of this,” he says. And again, he’s right. This is the Empire Strikes Back of comic book movies. Harvey Dent will loose half ...
Sunday Discussion: Is There Too Much Hysterical Hype for The Dark Knight?

... a comic book movie masterpiece that is sure to win Heath Leger an Oscar. But the more we talk about it and the more that the hype increases as the we count down the minutes, the bigger the chance it has to disappoint. Writing that just made me cringe, because I really can't see The Dark Knight disappointing anyone since it literally is a masterpiece. However, it's inevitable that someone out there won't like it at all. In fact, the first negative review already showed up online (and I'll address that specifically in a separate article). The buzz for this movie ...

... to the film. Although I was hoping it would remain one of the best reviewed films of the year, the first negative review has shown its ugly head courtesy of David Edelstein at New York Magazine. The so-called critic chimes on the morbid elements of the film, calling it "noisy, jumbled, and sadistic." I wanted to wait to address this, because I'm on my way to see The Dark Knight for my second time right now, but alas it's become the talk of the web and I can't help but address it before other critics get their chance to see it this morning as well. ... The initial reviews of “The Dark Knight” are in and like always, they vary between each film critic. It is currently receiving 100% on Rotten Tomato, which proves that ‘most’ critics are giving high praise to the film. The first negative review on the web comes from New York Magazine editor David Edelstein: Even if the death of Heath Ledger hadn’t already draped it in a funeral shroud, The Dark Knight would be a morbid affair: It could only be darker if Batman died. (He does die a little, on the inside.) It’s a shock—and very effective—to see a comic-book villain ...
Batman: The Dark Knight NY Magazine’s terrible review causes outrage

... film a negative review due to violence and “morbid” factors that seem related to Ledger’s untimely death:
The momentum doesn’t carry through, though. The Dark Knight is all fits and starts—fitfully suspenseful, fitfully scary, one jerky episode after another with jolts of brutality to keep you revved up. When Burton’s Batman came out, some prominent critics griped that the film was too violent for kids. Wait’ll they get a load of this.

Christopher Nolan’s film is indeed an epic that will leave you staggering from the theater, stunned by its scope and complexity. It’s also, thankfully, a vast improvement over his self-serious origin story, 2005’s “Batman Begins.”

When Ledger wields a knife, he is thoroughly terrifying (do not, despite the PG-13 rating, bring the children), and, as you’re watching him, you can’t help wondering—in a response that admittedly lies outside film criticism—how badly he messed himself up in order to play the role this way. His performance is a heroic, unsettling final act: this young actor looked into the abyss. New York : Oh, the verbiage probably wouldn’t matter if those truck crashes were any fun, but ...

Two weeks ago, David Edelstein attracted ridiculously outsized ire from the fanboy community for daring to do his job––ie, give his considered opinion on the cinematic value of The Dark Knight. Still, even the most vocal critics of Edelstein’s criticism didn’t really do anything more hostile than declare his review to be “bullshit.”
But other critics who reviewed the latest Batman film less than positively aren’t getting off so easily.
