Did You Ever See Rent on Broadway?
BuzzSugar —
Sad news coming from New York's Nederlander Theater today: Broadway musical Rent is closing after a 12-year run. The last performance will take place June 1. Opening in the spring of 1996, Rent enjoyed immediate and explosive success with both critics and audiences, despite (or perhaps because of) the story's focus on AIDS, drug addiction, and poverty.
I was one of those crazy, obsessed fans when the musical first opened, traveling into the city with my high-school friends to get cheap tickets to the show several times. We'd even wait around afterward for glimpses ...
is the writers' strike over?!?
popbytes —
many thanks to my pal JAM who sent over this joint statement from a bunch of entertainment CEOs - which will hopefully signals the end of the writers' strike! i certainly pray it's all over - if it were to continue - television would start to seem bleaker than it already is! i've been feeling super uneasy about all this strike business (along with a looming recession!) i hope everyone is happy with the deal - so here's to people going back to work again - cheers! popbytes over & out for tonight...xxoo! I thought for a while about not writing this post. It's a rare reporter who leaves daily news to try to make journalism a better institution. From our inbox this morning: You asked several weeks ago if I was taking the latest buyout at the Los Angeles Times. I apologize for not responding sooner. But I want to let you know that I am leaving the paper after 21 memorable years, including nearly 19 years in the Washington bureau. My last day is March 28. More specifically, Bird is blogging about his songwriting and recording processes for the ...
Hysterical, Indeed

Did anyone else catch this particularly poor layout decision in today’s New York Times online edition? Nothing like irony to complement one’s bitter coffee on a lazy Sunday.
If you’re not getting the joke, here’s the definition of “hysteria” from the 1913 edition of Webster’s dictionary:
A nervous affection, occurring almost exclusively in women, in which the emotional and reflex excitability is exaggerated, and the will power correspondingly diminished, so that the patient loses control over the ...

Pellicano Trial: Michael Ovitz Paid for Dirt on Rivals

You know, it does my heart good to see all of these power-hungry Hollywood brokers brought to their knees in the scandalous wire-tapping trial of private eye Anthony Pellicano. It’s like the facade of their lives is shattered into a thousand pieces. Ok, maybe not. Maybe the facade was shattered years ago, but it’s still interesting.

Do They Know It's Earth Day Time At All?
mediabistro.com: FishBowlLA —
Today is Earth Day. You'd hardly know if from the newspapers or press we've seen today. Really nothing about Earth Day or celebrations or observations.
We think environmentalism has become broader in recent years - farther reaching. So it's a staple of news now.
However, Earth Day tradition has devolved into April being the Green Issue for most magazines. That's it.
Agree? Think that's retarded? Let's discuss.

Collaborations, studio sessions and, of course, a little time at the blog spot-- all in a day's work for Andrew Bird. The singer/songwriter/violinist/whistler recently lined up a handful of new dates to go along with the somewhat sporadic itinerary he's made for himself over the next few months, including a run out west with Josh Ritter.
Of course, the infrequency of Bird's tour plans probably has something to do with that record he's working up in Nashville with producer Mark ...

Urbanspoon: iPhone Restaurant Roulette Frustrates Frank Bruni

Urbanspoon is a free iPhone application aimed at the indecisiveness gripping a certain subset of young moneyed urban dwellers. Sometimes it is really hard deciding between dinner at Pastis, Spice Garden or Buddha Bar! So with a shake, your iPhone becomes a cross between a Magic 8 Ball and a slot machine that uses GPS technology to land on a nearby restaurant, categorized by price, proximity and cuisine. The David Beckham Wad has been Blown
Celebrity Gossip | Entertainment News | Celebrity News | TMZ.com —
The David Beckham Wad has been Blown Posted Jul 20th 2008 7:30AM by TMZ Staff David Beckham It looks as though the insanity surrounding David Beckham's move to the states is losing steam. Last year, packed stands and after parties followed his every move as the Los Angeles Galaxy toured the states -- and he was injured most of the time. When the Galaxy played in Washington this season, attendance for the game was down by over 10,000 -- and last year's game was played on a week night, in the rain and Beck's injuries made an appearance in the pitch iffy. Not to mention the not one, not two, but three ...

A coalition of disabilities groups is expected as early as Monday to call for a national boycott of the film “Tropic Thunder” because of what the groups consider the movie’s open ridicule of the intellectually disabled.
The film, a movie-industry spoof directed by Ben Stiller, is set for release on Wednesday by Paramount Pictures and its DreamWorks unit.
“Not only might it happen, it will happen,” Timothy P. Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, said of the expected push for a boycott. Speaking by phone, Mr. Shriver said he planned to be in Los Angeles with representatives of his ...

NY Times profile the gentrification of Williamsburg, and TV on the Radio
Prefix —
[image] For their fall arts preview, the New York Times has a lengthy profile of TV on the Radio, their excellent new album Dear Science, and the gentrification of their Williamsburg neighborhood. Jon Pareles story traces the band s ascension from Brooklyn locals to major-label artistes, and how them, Liars, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs helped launch the new Brooklyn music scene onto the national conciousness. Those were the indie days, when TV on the Radio was passing out homemade discs at cafes, and band members squeezed bits of recording time between hours spent at day jobs. Over the past five years ...

The women are all in these spidery strapped shoes, usually black, very high heels.” [NYTimes] *Speaking of high, hot shoes, check out the splurge of the day: Camilla Skovgard Glazed Ankle Buck Sandals, $538 at shopbop.com
Daniel Radcliffe’s Equus debut!
Gryffindor Gazette —
The reviews of Daniel Radcliffe’s debut last night in Equus on Broadway are in, and they are very favorable! Here’s a few:
Ben Brantley of The New York Times said Radcliffe, 19, wore his part of a suburban stableboy who commits grotesque crimes against horses “like a tailor’s delight — that is, a natural fit that allows room to stretch.”
USA Today: “the Harry Potter star puts to rest any arguments that his appeal should be limited to moony adolescents and maudlin grown-ups.”
“In his impressive debut in a major ...

Last night, four premier Web design honchos got together on a panel with an ad man who has escaped from magazine publishing. This was at the fancy fashion school F.I.T., in New York City. Sex Myth: You're More Fertile After a Miscarriage
TresSugar —
If you're trying to have a baby, you may have heard that after enduring a miscarriage, your body is more fertile. Unfortunately, according to a recent article in The New York Times this is just a rumor. While it's true that your progesterone levels (the hormone that helps with pregnancy) are elevated, there's no evidence to support the notion that it can help you conceive any faster. What's more important is that you get back to your regular menstrual cycle, because as soon as you're ovulating again, you can try to get pregnant.
Miscarriages aren't the most pleasant topic, but it's ...

Trying to sum up the last two years of this election season, which at last wraps up tomorrow, is an ambitious undertaking, although a worthy one — because after America selects the new president tomorrow, we're going to be inundated with weeks of look-backs and look-aheads. By Vadim Rizov I know I keep coming up with constant excuses for this column's (to put it politely) somewhat irregular publishing schedule, but this one I need to make. Briefly: The Onion AV Club is in the thick of its year-end process, which meant I just couldn't pass up the chance to make a year-end top 10. I just couldn't; it's an addiction. So maybe my AV Club list and my list here will be markedly different; perhaps not (it's been a weak year and I don't imagine many more surprises cropping up). The network said its total of $261 million in ad revenue for all of Super Bowl day also is a record, calling it an especially impressive feat in the middle of the economy’s steep downturn. Rob Fishman: Initiating a Culture of Compensation
Huffington Post Entertainment Blog —
Modern day journalism school is a lot like the Make-A-Wish Foundation: for a steep price, ill-fated youngsters earn the company of industry luminaries, who recount their sterling careers — the very calling to which these kids would aspire were their futures not terminally stricken — while struggling to conceal the sad truth from (and about) their audience.
Fifteen years ago, journalism schools themselves were thought to be malignant (see "J School Ate My Brain" by Michael Lewis in a 1993 edition of the New Republic). Today, the tumor has metastasized and ...

NYTimes.com debuts huge new ad unit

Earlier this month, the Online Publishers Association introduced three new ad units for its members. Very large ad units. The idea is to counter the commoditization of standard display ads with a unique, eye-popping experience. Today, one of those magazine-style ads, a 336-by-860-pixel monster, debuted on NYTimes.com’s home page…
The larger ad units can also enable interactive experiences inside of them, essentially multimedia microsites embedded in ad units. And to fend off the commoditizing effects of ad networks, advertisers and their agencies can only purchase ...

Celebrity Mound —
Phil Spector, the rock music impresario behind such hits such as “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling” and “Be My Baby,” was convicted of shooting and killing a struggling actress at his mansion after a night of drinking.
Mr. Spector, 69, faces at least 18 years in prison. The jury, in a five-month trial, reached its unanimous decision after deliberating whether one of the recording industry’s best-known producers shot the woman in a fit of anger or, as his lawyers argued, merely witnessed the woman’s suicide.
In addition to second-degree homicide, the jury also found Mr. ...

Tim Berry: Who Should Decide What News is Important?
Huffington Post Entertainment Blog —
Back in the old days, editors decided what was news, not advertisers and not readers. There was this concept called "news values." Full-time professionals laid out the front page. They tried to highlight important political, economic, and social trends, coverage deemed important, rather than celebrities, fashions, nudity, and violence.
This was a long time ago. Back in the 1970s.
Which is not to say that media don't play to audiences. The original Yellow Journalism was Pulitzer vs. Hearst in the 1890s. And when I was a mainstream journalist, in the 1970s, playing to readers' baser instincts ...

She openly criticized both Chechnya’s laws and their president, which resulted in death threats ranging from the authorities to President Kadyrov himself. ...

Buried in this Sunday's sad and image assassinating story in the New York Times on John Edwards and his likely illegitmate kid and the campaign money he paid to his misstress was this music-related nugget:
Mr. Edwards once calmed an anxious Ms. Hunter by promising her that after his wife died, he would marry her in a rooftop ceremony in New York with an appearance by the Dave Matthews Band.
Giggles all around am I right? Except that the story was just plain sad. I mean, sure, dudes cheat on their wives, but John Edwards, an allegedly "good" guy cheated on his wife who has ...

Garth Brooks:
Garth Brooks to Play Vegas in December
Prefix —
Time is nigh for a Garth Brooks revival, as the milquetoast conqueror of country (he is the best selling solo artist of all time, folks) has announced plans to return to the stage this December for a 15 show run at Las Vegas' Wyn Resorts. It's high time for Brooks to come back, since the commercialized, simplified, working man good time music Brooks made in his '90s heyday is country music these days. Dec. 11 has been announced as the date for the first show, and the other 14 will continue through February.
