10 Best Picture Nominees?
Craig's MovieBlog —
... So, if fewer people have seen the films, fewer people care who wins. With 10 nominees, there’s more of an opportunity for films like Wall-E or The Dark Knight to make the cut (or this year, Up, Star Trek, or even, yes, The Hangover) to get in the race. That means more people watching, which means higher ad rates and more money for the Academy. Read about it at The Hot Blog, or In Contention. I’m sure there will be more to come.
Page to Screen delay
In Contention —
... I can promise, however, that Page to Screen will definitely be back this time next week, with a look at Dennis Lehane’s “Shutter Island.” We’ll also be getting into “An Education” and “Push” (AKA “Precious”) in due course — all titles that, especially with this morning’s game-changing announcement, look to remain very much in the awards conversation. Stay tuned. ...
Oscars Return to 10 Best Picture Nominees. Today in Film Bloggery 06/24/09
SpoutBlog —
... in the long term for the Oscars. I don’t think it’ll last.
Richard Lawson at Gawker points out how this is good for the studios:
…if the studios have doubled chances of doing a blitz awards-tie-in marketing, then that’s even better. More money for everyone means nicer, bigger parties and then everyone wins!
Kristopher Tapley at In Contention also addresses the potential effects on the marketing side:
Additionally, ...
This One Goes To 10
Mostly Movies —
By increasing the number of Best Picture nominees from 5 to 10 the Academy of Motion Picture blah blah has virtually guaranteed the inclusion of some universally beloved hit like The Dark Knight or (this year's most likely so far) Up. Given the Academy's love affair with Pixar it seems reasonable to assume that the studio will have a slot among the 10 for the foreseeable future; what does this do to the Animated Film Oscar? More importantly, to change seems likely to only further confuse the mass audience the Academy is desperately trying to woo. The Dark ...
Oscar's New Math Sparks High Anxiety
Media Decoder —
... Is this some strange move on the Academy’s part to further dilute an already incredibly suspect process? Kris Tapley of In Contention Why didn’t the Academy decide to nominate 15 films for Best Picture? This way, five more films will get the box-office benefit, but not really. Jeffrey Wells of ...
Comment of the day
In Contention —
We’re going to get a bunch of “nominated for two academy awards, including Best Picture” movies now.
Brian, from yesterday’s mammoth Oscar-goes-to-10 thread.
10 friggin’ nominees — a rant
In Contention —
... So the Academy, in one of the dumbest moves since awarding Roberto Begnini an Oscar for his incessant mugging in “Life is Beautiful,” is reaching back into its history to allow for 10 films in the Best Picture category. I just cannot understand why they would make such a blatantly stupid decision after so many years of five nominees! My God, if they wanted to shake things up, divide the nominees into drama and comedy/musical like the Globes, which is equally stupid, but makes more sense (somehow). Are they concerned they are that out of touch ...

Could ‘Mr. Fox,’ ‘Carol’ join toon Best Pic hopefuls?
In Contention —
... today at the central character from Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” a Scott Rudin-produced animated Roald Dahl adaptation. The film was recently shifted from Fox over to Fox Searchlight for the purposes of distribution, lest a small, niche film such as this be lost in the shuffle. But I have also heard murmurs (none of them confirmed, mind you) that the film will be pushed for a Best Picture nomination now that there are 10 slots up for grabs. ...
Winner of one Oscar nomination, including Best Picture
In Contention —
... The Academy’s recent controversial decision to bump the Best Picture category up to 10 nominees has been mulled over, digested, regurgitated and mulled over again at this point. There’s nothing really new that can be added to the conversation/debate/speculation, but as I was going through my updated Oscar predictions for Monday’s column, I suddenly realized I had a film in the predicted 10 that didn’t pop up in the predicted five in any other category. ...

Streep on the Oscars: Preempt other awards shows already
In Contention —

Hammond talks the season’s changes
In Contention —
It’s a year of considerable upheaval in the film awards landscape. This year has already brought a new AMPAS president, the addition of five new slots to the Best Picture category and a refined voting process for the top field as well. But that’s not where the changes end.
Pete Hammond is back on board for another year of his weekly Notes on a Season columns at The Envelope, and in this year’s introductory piece, he charts a number of other alterations to the season’s status quo:

OFF THE CARPET: Underdog season
In Contention —
... This feeling is obviously amplified by the Academy’s (and PGA’s) move to 10 nominees, a decision to which I was vocally averse. While I still maintain the new paradigm cheapens the meaning of an Oscar nomination, I will say that the timing couldn’t have been better for a company like, say, Apparition, which has a very real shot at a Best Picture nomination for ...
