... no matter what volume you play them at they always sound so fucking loud. We do for one welcome the arrival of our Japanese tinnitus-inducing noise overlords, take that, laws of acoustics. Here you have the album opener, ‘Message’, a paranoid piece of EBM psychosexual blues which would have been a perfect soundtrack for Oxlade’s final confrontation with the gigantic Beetle God in Settling the World. It is a breath of fire which burns the skin strangely funky (must be that conga) like TV on the Radio if they came from Cimmeria instead of Brooklyn, find them locked in a vicious ...

gorillavsbear.net —
One of the bands I was already pretty psyched about seeing at next month's Monolith Festival is TVOTR, and the first jam from their upcoming Dear Science LP (streaming over at their website) only adds to my excitement. The first thing about "Golden Age" that grabbed me is that filthy-ass bassline, but after reading a couple writeups on the track, I've yet to see anyone mention that it sounds like that's Kyp singing lead on this one, not Tunde. Then again, I'm wrong a lot. Anyone?

... The New York Times profiles TV on the Radio.
Those were the indie days, when TV on the Radio was passing out homemade discs at cafes, and band members squeezed bits of recording time between hours spent at day jobs. Over the past five years TV on the Radio has made its way steadily up the circuit, from independent to major label, from local clubs to international tours, while its music has grown ever more ambitious. Those ambitions are bohemian ones: packing a world of ideas into each song while ignoring both commercial imperatives and ingrown hipster ...

Instead of giving up, they rented alternate vehicles and raced to Morrison to make the show — amazing. What commitment. ...

It takes no time at all to pick out the vocal stylings of TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, Subtle's Adam "Doseone" Drucker, or Mike Patton of Peeping Tom/Faith No More/Tomahawk/I Am Legend/etc.

The B-side of TV on the Radio singer Tunde Adebimpe's upcoming solo 7" as Fake Male Voice is an oddball but intriguing Christmas present for lovers and Prince fans. A friend of mine insists you’re a political band. I say you’re hopeless romantics. How would you describe yourselves?
[Laughs] I don’t see where they’re mutually exclusive, why we can’t be hopelessly, politically romantic. If there’s any evidence of that, it’s the recent election. ... And just as you’re settling in to the gentle opening, ‘Young Liars’ explodes into life, a post rock wall of guitars signaling the arrival of TV On The Radio. It’s startling. Stunning. You can almost feel the wave of noise knock you back slightly. And it doesn’t let up. Not for the next hour and a half at least. ‘Young Liars’ dies down, replaced by a frenetic take on ‘The Wrong Way’. Sped up and played with complete abandon. An accelerated underground garage punk take that bears little in common to it’s recorded incarnation. It’s clear tonight is not going to be a ...

Autumn de WildeAsk yourself, “what is the smoothest record I’ve heard this year?” Now if the answer is anything except The Bird & The Bee’s new record Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future, then you simply haven’t heard Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future. The sophomore effort from the duo of Inara George and Greg Kurstin is effortlessly stylish and slick, in the very best sense of the word, blending lounge, jazz, tropicalia and, most importantly, Bacharachian pop into a blend that’s unabashedly retro in spirit but still very ...

Review of The Hold Steady’s A Positive Rage
.: chromewaves.net v7.5 —
FacebookIf you’re looking for anything revelatory or even revealing about The Hold Steady in the video portion of their new live document A Positive Rage, you’ll likely be disappointed. Over the course of just under an hour, the doc follows the band on tour in the Fall of 2006, in support of Boys & Girls In America, as they marvel at the size of the venues they’re selling out and dispensing their no frills, rock & roll gospel.
There’s no dirt to be found because, unless they saved their goat sacrifices for after ...

... Isz has flooded the originally jazzy track with hand claps, probing bass, woozy electric violin, and gauzy synths - creating a lush and danceable Animal Collective-meets-supernatural-sci-fi vibe. It's just like Saul Williams described Jneiro Jarel's music: "Otherworldly. Beats for hovercraft Saturdays. Makes an alien homesick." As for the rest of the remixes? NYC Popfest with The Radio Dept, Pants Yell!, The Secret History, Eux Autres and Computer Perfection at the Bell House in Brooklyn
.: chromewaves.net v7.5 —
Frank YangI’ve been to a LOT of shows in the past decade or so, and as such my list of bands whom I’m still waiting to see live is pretty short by this point - and last week, it got one big name shorter when I got to see reclusive Swedes The Radio Dept not once but twice in New York thanks to their headliner status at NYC Popfest. The venue for the big show was the Bell House in Brooklyn, a good-sized venue with a vibey bar/lounge up front and a nicely-laid out if horribly-lit live music room in back. Though The Radio Dept remain very much a cult band, the show ...

It’s clear these “distractions” keep the creative juices flowing for these guys, yet the band still remains relatively unknown to most casual listeners. That’s all about to change with their new album Dissolver. If you haven’t heard their latest material yet, you’re in for a treat. ... in position” set for me, as I caught this set purely to try and get in place for the following act. But I’m glad I did, if only for the spectacle of Spencer Moody and his drunken rant and on stage antics. It’s always entertaining to see the band give the audience the middle finger. After awhile, though, the act started to feel old… Moody was too wasted to even really sing, just growl out the same note. It got a lot of people talking, though.

Best of Heineken Green Spheres Stage
State Magazine —
... 2. GLASVEGAS, Sunday
The second of GLASVEGAS’ three Irish trips this summer, the late night (and crucially dark) atmosphere of the Green Spheres tent should suit them better than their Oasis / U2 support slots. It won’t hurt either that they have channeled the anthemic, mass singalong songwriting of those two bands into something all the more edgy and, dare we say, exciting.

The Wooden Sky at Sonic Boom in Toronto
.: chromewaves.net v7.5 —
Frank YangIt’s funny that though I offered readers an introduction to The Wooden Sky just last month, watching them play an in-store at Sonic Boom on Monday night, the eve of release for their new album If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone, it felt like I was the one being introduced to them for the first time.
Previously, I’d regarded them as very good with moments of great roots-rock band – terrific at what they did but unlikely to turn anyone’s world upside down. And initial listens to the new record backed that up – it ...

... A wave of skepticism fell over me as I watched TV On The Radio trot out the horn section at the beginning of their set. After yesterday’s set I don’t know if I could ever enjoy the band without them in the future. It was that great. Seriously. Playing what they described from the stage as “their last show for a long time,” TV On The Radio brought lots of energy as the temperatures began to cool down. TV on the Radio; They may have just decided to take some time off to focus on their side projects, but maybe that would also give them the time to reach out to all their cool friends for one of these fests.
