The bands of 2008 - your predictions, please

... I don't understand why, of all the tight-panted guitar acts on the London toilet circuit, Joe's crew are currently the subject of love and ecstatic reviews. But I can see them making a dent in 2008. 3. Vampire Weekend: New Yorkers with a plan. The single Mansard Roof is one of the oddest things around at the moment. Now for your own predictions, three apiece. But make it interesting - instead of the three you think will make it big in 2008, make it three who deserve to break through but won't, because they're too arty, obscure or unlistenable. ...

At their core, they’re pretty much the same thing: offbeat, but just so; eccentric, but not too; awkward, but self-aware; quirky, but formulaic in their quirkiness. Each embodies a sensibility that slowly, with great purpose, has been morphing from cult-status to mass-appreciation. It’s now hitting upon an explosive convergence in the mainstream. ...

Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908, a year before my mother was born, so when I first grinned and snivelled my way through it at the age of eight, it was a youthful 40. I revisited it through the eyes of my own child in the 1980s, when it was approaching 80. Then our family actually went to Prince Edward Island, and stayed in Charlottetown, and saw the sprightly, upbeat Anne of Green Gables musical that's been running there continuously since 1965. I enjoyed it a lot, but watching a show about an ...

Describing their sound as "Upper West Side Soweto," Ezra Koenig (vocals and guitar), Rostam Batmanglij (keyboards, guitar, producer), Chris Baio (bass), and Chris Tomson (drums) combine rock and punk with reggae and township jive. It's an intriguing combination to say the least, and despite some reservations I have, they pull it off fairly well on their self-titled debut album. The Times Online interviews Bob Dylan, who gives his endorsement of Barack Obama for the US presidency.
"Well, you know right now America is in a state of upheaval,” he says. “Poverty is demoralising. You can't expect people to have the virtue of purity when they are poor. But we've got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up...Barack Obama. He's redefining what a politician is, so we'll have to see how things play out. Am I hopeful? Yes, I'm hopeful that things might change. Some things are going to have to.” He offers a parting handshake. “You ...

As he puts it: "Sometimes I worry that the ever-increasing trend toward excessive innovation has pushed the art and music world into a slapstick exhibition of dog breeding, generating increasingly newer, more contemporary fashions: gothic folk, for one. Or Afro-beat Ivy League pop." Uh oh, you guys gonna take that? ...

Vampire Weekend | The Fillmore, Miami 6/9/08

Here's another review from our friend down in Florida, Drew Gerlach.
The other night I got to catch the most blogged-about band of 2008 so far, Vampire Weekend, at the recently renovated Fillmore at Jackie Gleason Theater in South Beach. The theater itself had millions of dollars of renovation with brilliant chandeliers hanging over the orchestra seating and amazing, refurbished acoustics. I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance of this theater and will definitely not think twice before heading back. In my humble opinion, this theater is the premier venue for music in South ...

Vampire Weekend Extend Tour

... Were any other weekend to stretch on this long, there would be bottles strewn everywhere, ever-flimsier excuses for missing work, and maybe even some talk of rehab. But this is, of course, a Vampire Weekend. And when those boys get together to keep that Saturday/Sunday vibe alive for a few more months on the road? Well, I think we can all raise a glass to that. ...

Both VW and WW have solo dates before and after their tour together. Vampire Weekend's next show is August 22 in Reading, England, and Williams' next one is August 15 in NYC. A. I agree with you, I think there are some things we share in common with “Graceland,” but if you look at our album from track to track and that album track to track, it would be kind of ridiculous to say our album is like a rip-off, which I think some people have said. Great crowd reception (but not as great as Cut Copy). Their performance felt like the last ode to summer. The band had a school-kid giddiness about them and seemed genuinely enthusiastic. I don't know what I was expecting with their show, really. I've read good and bad reviews of previous shows, but I felt like their Monolith set was pleasant enough. Didn't blow ...
