By Dan Callahan [ Revolutionary Road opens December 26th in limited release; wide release in January. ] Richard Yates’ debut novel Revolutionary Road is a suitably bleak vision of fifties suburbia and Madison Avenue soullessness, but it’s much more than that; as Yates remorselessly tightens ...

First wave of raves for Revolutionary Road

... DiCaprio launches himself into terrific Nicholsonian rages with Winslet; they both seem secure as performers and it’s tempting to think of this as the Titanic generation’s graduation. The movie is occasionally prestigey (it’s time to put composer Thomas Newton out to pasture), but no film featuring Bug’s ferocious Michael Shannon, as a neighbor’s mentally disturbed son who has weird insights, could be confused for mere Oscar fare.

Self-Styled Siren —
... Men-style "how cool, that is SO period" flourishes. And that's good; you shouldn't be sitting there wondering where can you get a dress just like Kate's. This is a chamber piece, dependent on the filmmaker's ability to draw you into a couple's claustrophobic marriage. Sirk managed that even as he used an extremely strong style, but it is hardly fair to a filmmaker to say he isn't Sirk. The Siren misses the presence of an extraordinary directorial vision, as did Dan Callahan in his perceptive review, but Revolutionary Road is still a good, if not great, movie. ...

... than shrugs of measured praise. Certainly the best work Mendes has ever produced for the screen, Revolutionary Road works (on the level that it does work) as a showcase for performances: big stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are probably at the top of their game, a star-making performance is registered in less than a handful of scenes from Michael Shannon, and, in the ultimate nagging old lady role, Kathy Bates reminds us why she is the greatest living nagging old lady in all of cinema. That all of this talent is put to the service of an adaptation which ...
