Mad Men 's brilliant third season finale earlier this month is still echoing in the mind. And in the culture. January Jones was a game host of Saturday Night Live the following weekend. (Though she didn't make anyone forget Jon Hamm's great hosting gig last year. He is seriously funny.) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton revealed that she's a fan of the show. And of course her husband, former President Bill Clinton, is a Mad Men fan as well. Which is simply too perfect for words. I could easily write a column comparing Bill Clinton and Don Draper. Avoiding the obvious cheap shots. Another time, perhaps. I've been thinking about the arc of the series from its brilliant pilot, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," set in March 1960, to the fabulous third season finale, which takes place in December 1963. Where has the series been, where is it now, and where might it be going with creator Matthew Weiner? The reality is that our beloved old Sterling Cooper was a rather stodgy advertising agency. 'Prisoner' Debuts to 'Mad Men'-Level Ratings

By Daniel Frankel AMC's three-part miniseries remake of classic U.K. series "The Prisoner" got off to a solid if unspectacular start Sunday, drawing 2.2 million viewers. The total is only slightly off the season-average pace of AMC's signature series, "Mad Men," which averaged 2.3 million viewers for its just-completed third season. Starring James Caviezel and Ian McKellen, "The Prisoner" represents the first series gestated under AMC's new creative team, which is headed by Joel Stillerman.

The opening credits of Mad Men are the most disturbing and haunting for me. It is 9/11 and the images of the businessmen falling from the twin towers. Yet they are falling past images of consumerism and ads which sell the "best" of America ... in silhouette. My father was an ad man -- a PR guy -- and I recall my first trip to New York with him while he was visiting clients, making commercials, and the dinners at Sardis before dinner, the Algonquin, the end of an era portrayed in Mad Men . The nostalgia of the wood paneled den and the mother wondering which model/client was being entertained (my mother can't watch the show....my father, on the other hand confirms to me that Mad Men shows exactly how it used to be in that world). When politics and advertising became one, it meant spending early November Tuesdays at campaign headquarters with Styrofoam hats, parades and t-shirts, and those signs in our yard. Mad Men's January Jones tried her hand at comedy this week when she hosted Saturday Night Live. But was she able to cut loose from the stiff Betty Draper persona we've all come to know? Jones monologue was almost immediately interrupted by a group of obsessed fans, which Jones referred to as "Mad Mennies." It's been a week and I am still recovering from the excitement of the season finale of AMC's Mad Men . In this column just a few weeks ago, before the finale or the extraordinary penultimate episode of the season that dealt directly with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, I said that it would be "absolutely fascinating to see how Kennedy's murder [would] impact the employees of Sterling Cooper," noting that the tragedy "shook the entire world as it changed the lives of every American citizen old enough to realize what had happened." Sure enough, Mad Men creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner didn't disappoint. Quite the opposite: He exceeded all expectations. If you've seen the show Mad Men then you're already familiar with Betty Draper's off putting yet alluring character . In the majority of her scenes she's located in a plaid-coordinated suburban kitchen staring blankly at her children while discontentedly huffing a cigarette. As her children eat (or dare speak) she sips from her bottomless wine glass through perpetually lipsticked stained lips. Only when one of her blue-eyed children draws Betty's attention with an innocent query, "When is Daddy coming home?" (FYI Daddy is never home because daddy is always up to no good with some other coiffed babe) will Betty wake up.
