Sarah Jessica Parker and Caroline Kennedy appeared together Wednesday afternoon for the kickoff of the "Shop for Public Schools" fundraiser that will benefit New York City area schools. At Wednesday's event, Sarah Jessica commented that the ongoing event is "a great opportunity for all New Yorkers to get involved," according to the Associated Press . "Shop for Public Schools," which began in 2004, started when a collection of retailers approached Kennedy, who is the vice-chair of The Fund for Public Schools, asking how they could help. The Fund for Public Schools has raised over $230 million for New York public schools since its inception in 2002.

NEW YORK — Caroline Kennedy and Sarah Jessica Parker want you to shop 'til you drop _ and feel good about doing it. The pair kicked off New York City's fifth annual "Shop for Public Schools" promotion on Wednesday. For the next week, more than 200 retail locations across the city will donate part of their proceeds to public school libraries. The actress calls it "a great opportunity for all New Yorkers to get involved." Kennedy, who's vice chairwoman of The Fund for Public Schools, says the money will help children "learn to love reading, improve their research skills and pursue their dreams." Steve Parker: Paul Newman, race car driver, 83

Paul Newman was the real thing. He died yesterday at age 83 in his Connecticut home (close to his home race track, Lime Rock Raceway). Newman was said to have been suffering from lung cancer, and was for many years a heavy smoker. Still, making it to 83, smoking or not, is not bad at all. Everyone knows about his film career and there's no lack of information on his life all over the Web. So, here I'll share a few memories, and offer a few anecdotes which some readers might appreciate knowing. Many of his obituaries are referring to him as a "racing enthusiast," but he was not a wealthy dilettante who spent weekends slumming with gear-heads and wrenches; he was a skilled, serious, professional and world-class race car driver as well as one of the most successful team owners in the sport's history.
