IGGY POP performed a tribute to Madonna Monday night (March 10) at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The rocker and his band THE STOOGES â who opened for MADONNA in Dublin, Ireland, on her "Re-Invention Tour" in 2004 â were chosen by Madonna to sing "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light" at the ceremony in New Yorkâs Waldorf-Astoria Hotel before Justin Timberlake presented the "Queen of Pop" with her award. At the end, a shirtless Pop said, "you make me feel shiny and new, like a virgin touched for the very first time," and tossed his microphone to the floor, according to The Associated Press . Yeah guys, I mean...not like I was expecting some kinda "L.A. Blues" blowout as a big raspberry in the face of the HOF and I love both Ig and "Ray Of Light" but... Maybe "Burnin' Up" was better? Madonna's blatant disinterest in whatever's going around her is still kinda disarming? God bless Mike Watt for making the same infectiously goofy-ass faces after plunkin' away for 30 years? WTF: The Stooges: "Ray of Light" (Madonna cover; live at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) [Video] Iggy Pop and his Stooges reuniting for a godawful 2007 album? The Weirdness. Iggy and the Stooges getting the nod to cover Madonna's William Orbit-produced 1998 Ray of Light title track for the Material Mom's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? OK, that's also pretty weird. The actual performance of "Ray of Light", featuring the always-shirtless Iggy's dropping the melody to a flat baritone as the band thrashes and skronks, was even weirder. Justin Timberlake is inducting Madonna into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . He sits next to her, very much in her shadow, and the body language is so deferential it's like he's her eunuch nephew from Salt Lake City, too simple to know he has no balls. He has been allowed to come to the ceremony as long as he behaves himself. Which is more than can be said for Iggy Pop, who graced the audience with the above performance for Madonna's induction ceremony. For some reason, the reformed Stooges decided to do a version of Ray of Light, that faux-dance-spiritual-beat poem monopitch classic.
