Coldplay deny stealing song
Music: Music blog | guardian.co.uk —
It seems not everyone's happy about Coldplay's track Viva La Vida, least of all the band Creaky Boards who claim in this video that they wrote it. The clip also alleges that Chris Martin nicked the tune when he saw them live at New York's CMJ music festival in October 2007. A case of musical theft? Hmm, maybe not. Coldplay have refuted the claim, saying that their track was written and demoed in March 2007, a full six months before Chris saw Creaky Boards play live.
Coldplay Accused Of Swiping "Viva La Vida" From Mustachioed Indie Rocker [As The Arcade Fire Bides Their Time]
Idolator: Music News, Reviews, And Gossip —
In October 2007, the Brooklyn outfit Creaky Boards was excited to see a person who resembled Coldplay's Chris Martin enjoying their CMJ festival performance. Less than a year later, that enthusiasm has turned into frustration as bandleader Andrew Hoepfner discovered that Coldplay's iTunes-ad-featured "Viva La Vida" had a melody that was kind of close to their "The Songs I Didn't Write," performed at the aforementioned concert. Did Martin go hopping from show to show at CMJ, lifting bits for his next album? Don't be daft, say the superstars; "Viva La Vida" was allegedly demoed over a year ago. This hasn't stopped Hoepfner from creating a video clip ...
New York Band Claims Coldplay Stole “Viva La Vida” Melody
Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily —
Did Coldplay steal the melody of their iPod commercial-fronting single “Viva La Vida” from a Brooklyn indie band? That’s what the Creaky Boards are alleging in a new YouTube clip. According to the band, “We were flattered when we thought we saw Chris Martin in the crowd” when the band performed at a CMJ showcase in October 2007. In the side-by-side comparison of the two tracks, the verses do seem a tad similar, though according to a Coldplay spokesperson, “Viva La Vida” was actually written and demoed in March 2007, well before Martin was supposed to have seen the ...
Coldplay - Brooklyn Band Claim Coldplay Stole Viva La Vida Melody
ContactMusic Ltd | Latest News —
A Brooklyn-based indie group have implied Coldplay use the melody of one of their songs for the latter's Viva La Vida. The Coldplay song currently sits second in the download chart, having been bought by thousands of users of iTunes and other online music stores since it featured in an iTunes commercial. But according to Creaky Boards, the melody of Viva La Vida is strikingly similar to that of their own track, ironically entitled The Songs I Didn't Write. In a video clip posted on YouTube, Creaky Records' frontman Andrew Hoepfner says he wrote a "strikingly similar" song to Viva La Vida over a year before the Coldplay track and implies Chris Martin may have 'borrowed' his ...
Chris Martin Is A Thief, Or Maybe He Isn't
Stereogum —
Chris Martin Is A Thief, Or Maybe He Isn't thumbnail icon: Chris Martin Is A Thief, Or Maybe He Isn't As you might have heard, Coldplay have a new record called Viva La Vida, Or Death And All His Friends and a song and iTunes commercial of almost the same name. It's pretty common for people to say this or that Coldplay song sounds like Radiohead or U2, but Creaky Boards? There's a Brooklyn band with that name whose vocalist and songwriter Andrew Hoepfner claims Chris Martin saw them perform "The Songs I Didn't Write" at CMJ 2007, then ripped it off in "Viva La Vida." Creaky Boards made a video to bring their claims to light and ...
News: Coldplay Deny Stealing Melody From Brooklyn Band
Pitchfork Media - Today —
It's a well-known storyline and one that feels increasingly frequent with the speed of media in the internet age: Popular band steals idea from unknown band without giving proper credit. But in the YouTube-originated case of Coldplay vs. Andrew Hoepfner of Brooklyn band Creaky Boards (via NME.com), it's not so simple (is it ever?).
On one hand, Hoepfner claims in his video that Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" steals one of its main melodies from a Creaky Boards song coincidentally titled "The Songs I Didn't Write". Hoepfner says, "We were flattered ...

Brooklyn Band to Coldplay: That's My Melody! Isn't It?
Cinema Blend Music —
Brooklyn Band to Coldplay: That's My Melody! Isn't It? Lets say youre in a band, a struggling band, of course, that is happy simply to play a gig not in your moms garage. Lets say youre not exactly the most original band there ever was, no revolutions here. Lets say in your lack of originality you lean towards a less epic version of Coldplay with a more pretentious name and a scruffier singer with the same pretty voice. Its gonna be damn hard to make it when your Coldplays ugly duckling little brother, isnt it? So you flip the situation, you make them your little brother (no, your band is not U2). How? YouTube! Brooklyn-based band the Creaky Boards has accused ...

Did Coldplay Rip off Another Band for their New Single?
Gabby Babble —
Andrew Hoepfner, the frontman for Brooklyn-based indie band The Creaky Boards, is claiming that Chris Martin and Coldplay ripped off one of his songs and turned it into their new single, "Viva la Vida". In the above video, Hoepfner merges the two songs with subtitles "explaining that the band thought Chris Martin was in the audience when they performed the ditty at the CMJ Music Festival in October of 2007." The two songs do sound similar, but to me it seems like a very basic tune to begin with. The oddest part about this story, though, is The Creaky Boards' song is called "The Songs I Didn't ...

Tidbits: Someone finally says no to Paris
msnbc.com: Gossip —
Celebutantes beware! Impulse pooch purchases aren’t as easy as they used to be. Just ask Paris Hilton. According to the New York Post , someone actually had the nerve to turn down the love-em-and-leave-em pet collector when all she wanted was a cuddly prop, er, pup for her latest photo shoot. The nerve! A Page Six spywitness caught everyone’s favorite heirhead at Melrose Avenue’s The Puppy Store desperate for a new Yorkie. (Maybe her last Yorkie, Cinderella, outgrew her cute phase , or went missing , or was reclaimed due to abandonment — whatever.) Allegedly Paris was en route to a photo shoot when she made the poochy pit stop, ...

Ripoff??
Asshat Hollywood —
So there's this guy Andrew from a band called Creaky Boards who claims Coldplay's song "Viva La Vida" (that annoying one in the ITunes commercial that you think is U2 at first) is a ripoff of a song that he wrote. He even says the Coldplay lead douche Chris Martin went to one of his band's shows. What makes it even funnier is that the name of Andrew's song is "The Songs I Didn't Write." Judge for yourself. Here's the full version of Coldplay's song. Both songs suck ass in my opinion. But both Coldplay and Andrew ripped off this awesome guy: In ...

Guitarist Joe Satriani Sues Coldplay
Spinner —
[image] Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani has accused the members of Coldplay of lifting "substantial original portions" from one of his songs and using it in the band's recent hit, 'Viva La Vida.' With his copyright infringement suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles, the 52-year-old shredder is seeking damages and "any and all profits" from the group for allegedly plagiarizing his 2004 instrumental 'If I Could Fly.' It's not clear whether the complaint dives into specifics of the "substantial" similarities between the two songs. However, a quick, side-by-side listen to both tracks reveals a kinship between the melodies in Coldplay's verse and ...

Coldplay has been sued by guitarist Joe Satriani in a copyright infringement case. Satriani claims the recent Coldplay hit “Viva La Vida” is a blatant rip off of his 2004 song “If I Could Fly.” The suit alleges that “substantial original portions” of his song were used in “Viva La Vida” and seeks profits and damages. Satriani hopes for a jury trial.

Coldplay Takes a Stand (for Once)
Vulture —
We didn't give the copyright-infringement lawsuit that Joe Satriani filed against Coldplay last week much thought, mainly because we stopped listening to him when his music started sounding like Yanni with a wah-wah pedal. But now that Coldplay has issued a statement on the matter (it begins in hilariously tongue-in-cheek fashion with the statement "With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani," a phrase that hasn't been uttered before or since), we thought it was high time to raise the perfectly viable question of whether Creaky Boards who also accused Coldplay of lifting their melody for "Viva La Vida" earlier this year ...
Everyone copied Coldplay!
Miny Moe —
So, I know there's a lot of buzz going around about Joe Satriani suing Coldplay for plagiarism, the latest in a series of allegations that "Viva La Vida" is, in fact, stolen. Personally, I think that the answer to the controversy is just that Coldplay made a simple effing song composed of the same repeated chords. A kid learning to play guitar could probably accidentally stumble upon the beginning riffs of "Viva La Vida." Still, if YouTube is allowed as evidence in court, Coldplay might be in trouble: All the Best on a Tuesday ...

I take plagiarism very seriously (Crystal Castles and the Mystery Jets both have their issues). If you ever applied your craft to something (and your blood, sweat and tears), it’s a distasteful feeling and even worse we can’t really do anything. This happens a lot to bloggers getting their posts pasted. Who knows someone maybe be copying our content right now and we wouldn’t know.
I highly doubt they make anywhere near the same amount of money that Coldplay does and generally when there is plagiarism it falls under certain legal laws. Coldplay and the track “Viva La Vida” have been accused twice now first by ...
Cat Stevens Now the Third Person to Write ‘Viva La Vida’ Before Coldplay
Vulture —
Hapless soft-rock combo Coldplay has been accused of plagiarizing their 2008 hit "Viva la Vida" — again! Following similar claims by guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani and Brooklyn band the Creaky Boards, Cat Stevens says that one of his songs was the basis for Chris Martin's iTunes-advertising single. Like those other tracks whose hooks Coldplay also obviously appropriated, Stevens's "Foreigner Suite" is yet another perfect match, which should no doubt make the division of royalties interesting. Here's a comparison between "Viva La Vida" and Stevens's "Foreigner Suite": ...
