PopWatch — Anthony Edwards to return to 'ER' despite his character being dead Well, PopWatchers, I gotta say I didn't see this one coming: Despite my hopes that the upcoming final season of ER would bring a slew of guest appearances from some of the approximately 2,560 actors that have graced the halls of County General over the past 14 years, Anthony Edwards' Dr. Mark Greene never quite entered my consciousness. Pop Critics — Good ol’ Dr. Mark Greene. One of the best characters ever on ER, he died of a brain tumor towards the end of the 2001-02 season, and the goodbye was one of the most gut-wrenching, tearful moments in the series. Just re-watching his final scene in the video at the bottom of this article brought all the sadness back.
