Although the sound suffered a little from that late-night flat sounding mixing, Wayne still fell down at the end, probably exhausted from listening to the non-stop gonging going on behind him. Conan has had one hell of a musical lineup this week, kicking off Monday with Grizzly Bear and special guest Victoria Legrand. While I was hoping everyone's favorite Bear band would perform their achingly beautiful new track "Slow Life" off of the New Moon soundtrack (also featuring Victoria), but played it safe with the sure-fire "Two Weeks". Last night, however, The Flaming Lips were in full-on new album mode, promoting the distortedly dark Embryonic by playing "Watching The Planets" - a song on the LP featuring Karen O's backing vocals. The Flaming Lips played Embryonic album-closer "Watching the Planets" on Conan last night, and goddamn, it was very good. Listening to the record, I find myself slightly bothered by how low the vocals sit in the mix, but in a live setting, when you can see first-hand how much crazy shit is going on, it's far less irksome, and in fact winds up seeming like a brilliant production choice.
