Hey folks, Harry here. I just got a call from a family member of Cyd Charisse, who let me know that roughly an hour and a half ago she passed away. Cyd was born 87 years ago in Amarillo, Texas. But for the rest of us, Cyd was born on screen as one of the most beautiful, graceful and magical dancers to ever grace the screen. You can look up her filmography - off the top of your head you'll remember her from SINGIN IN THE RAIN, THE BAND WAGON, IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, SILK STOCKINGS and my personal favorite Gene Kelly musical... Cyd Charisse, the impossibly long-limbed actress and dancer (born Tula Ellice Finklea) who starred alongside Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly in classic musicals like "The Band Wagon" and "Singin' in the Rain," passed away today. From the AP:
Her height was 5 feet, 6 inches, but in high heels and full-length stockings, she seemed serenely tall, and she moved with extraordinary grace. Her flawless beauty and jet-black hair contributed to an aura of perfection that Astaire described in his 1959 memoir, "Steps in Time," as "beautiful dynamite."

Back in classic musical cinema, dancing and singing was far more important than how you ranked on the gossip meter. Of course if you dance like that now, it will get you beat up on the playground but it truly was an art. Ask anyone to name actors from the song and dance era and you are likely to hear names like Fred Estaire and Ginger Rogers, but ask them to name the most notable movie, and most would say Singin’ in the Rain.
