Huluing "Hoop Dreams."
Published 7/30/2008 by Alison Willmore at IFC: Indie Eye
"Hoop Dreams," Steve James' mighty, influential 1994 documentary following two inner-city Chicago teenagers over five years in frantic pursuit of the dream of becoming professional basketball players, is up on Hulu for free (with "limited commercial interruption" from sponsors) here.
Hulu CEO Jason Kilar writes on the site's blog:
In January 1997, I was walking curbside at Boston's Logan Airport. Waiting patiently in a line in the freezing temperatures was a guy named Steve James, the director of the documentary film Hoop Dreams. Steve was standing there by himself, ...
Hoops Dreams Is Now Free On Hulu

I don't know if it's true that Hoop Dreams was the documentary that most documentary fans credit with getting them into documentaries, but it sounds about right (that or Roger And Me.) I know when I saw it in 1994 it was only because of the hype -- according to Wikipedia the film, which follows two high school students over a period of five years as they attempt to become professional basketball players, was on more critics' top ten lists than Pulp Fiction. I didn't think I could possibly sit through "a movie about sports," much less be transfixed by it. But I now I know I can sit through ...

Sit back and enjoy HOOP DREAMS
Published 8/1/2008 by HEADGEEK at Ain't It Cool News - The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.
Hey folks, Harry here - I don't know if you know this but there's a really cool service online called HULU - and if this posts - I'll write up an introduction for a movie or a triple feature from time to time for you to enjoy - but today - the film I'll try is HOOP DREAMS. In the history of Siskel & Ebert - I don't think I ever saw them so passionately attempt to get the entire world to be smart as hell and watch this absolutely brilliant documentary - I can't possibly recommend this story of youth reaching for NBA stardom highly enough. It's great! And it's here with limited commercial interruption. Enjoy... Damn seems to not ...
The Art of the Documentary
Published 8/4/2008 by Scaramouch at YesButNoButYes Stories
Last night I got sucked into watching Hoop Dreams again, which is currently free on Hulu (not sure about outside the US). I've always found it a pretty depressing movie, not so much because of it's depiction of inner city life, but more from the realization that the promise of professional sports is every bit as dangerous as casino gambling, seems to have about the same odds of success, and is peddled to the under 21 as their best chance of a better life. Go figure.
As I surfed around afterwards, I saw that Hoop Dreams had been named the #1 best documentary of all time by the International ...
ENJOY THE DOG DAYS AT HULU

[image] I've been hooked on the free streaming video site Hulu the whole summer. And not just because I can watch episodes of The A-Team whenever I get a B.A. Baracus craving. Since June they've launched a new movie or TV show every weekday in their Days of Summer series (it ends in a few weeks). Today they premiered The Taking of Pelham One Two Three . Not one of my favorites, but for the most part I've been impressed by their taste: Lost In Translation , The Three Stooges collection , Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind , (and that was just the first three days of the ...
