The great Memphis soulman Isaac Hayes died at his home on Sunday. He was 65. Hayes will be remembered mostly for "The Theme from Shaft," Isaac Hayes by Joel Brodsky his No. 1 Academy Award winning single in 1971, and for his role as Chef on South Park . But he accomplished so much more. The bald-headed singer co-wrote R&B classics "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'," and his extended versions of "Walk On By" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" on Hot Buttered Soul broke new ground at the end of the turbulent 1960s. After suffering a stroke in 2006, Hayes cut back on live performances. CelebStoner attended his final New York show in ...

[image] How come all the cool brothas keep dying? In just 24 hours Bernie Mac died of Pneumonia (he was only 50) and Isaac Hayes was found dead in his home next to a treadmill. Both losses were sudden and unexpected, but since this is a music blog I will choose to focus on Mr. Hayes' too short life. In 1972 his work on the Shaft soundtrack earned him the Academy Award for Best Song and three Grammys, as well as the #1 album and song ("Theme From Shaft ") on the Billboard charts. Pitchfork Media - Today —
Isaac Hayes, who passed away this weekend, may be best known to some for playing Chef and scoring Shaft, and no disrespect whatsoever to South Park and wakka-chikka guitars, but his legacy extends much deeper than that. Shortly after graduating from high school, he started working at Stax Records in Memphis, where, as a member of the Mar-Keys, he played sax and keys on many of the label's biggest hits, including much of Otis Redding's discography. With David Porter, he co-wrote numerous hits, including "Soul Man", "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby", "Hold On! I'm Comin'" (this is how it's done), ...
