Early Buzz and Video Clip: Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler
Published 9/6/2008 by slashfilm.com at /Film
Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler appears to be a big hit at the 65th Venice Film Festival. The Hollywood Reporter claims that the film created “a buzz that had been absent for most of the festival.” Anne Thompson reports that the film is hoping to land a distributor which could “ramp up a release before year’s end so that [Mickey] Rourke can qualify for Oscar consideration” making a December release very likely. Here is a small excerpt from Variety’s review: “Talk about comebacks. After many years in the wilderness ...

The Wrestler
Published 9/6/2008 at OH NO!!
In a performance of astonishing commitment, detail and emotional impact, Mickey Rourke reclaims his position at the pinnacle of American acting in The Wrestler. It is no overstatement to say that Rourke advances the discipline in this portrait of a professional wrestler long past his prime, now eking out a living making blood sport for cheap entertainment. Director Darren Aronofsky strips this story of all false sentiment, producing a pure, vivid character study that is Rourke's best performance to date. Back in the eighties, Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Rourke) was at the top of his game, but twenty-five years later he finds himself ...

Venice ‘08: “The Wrestler” Wins the Golden Lion, Anne Hathaway Wins Nothing
Published 9/6/2008 by Nick Plowman at Fataculture
[image] Talk about a flat festival. This year Venice really amounted to almost nothing, in my humble, outsider’s opinion. I have always thought it to be the most glamorous, perhaps prestigious festival in the world, with the exception of Cannes, which it may very well be, but compared to other years it definitely seems to have made an abnormally small impact. Perhaps Toronto and Telluride clogging up the interwebs didn’t help, and that most US bloggers didn’t attend meant that there was less publicity. They are the loudest voices and without them on the scene, we hear a lot less. On the upside, “ The Wrestler ...

Clips 'n' Pics: The Wrestler, Gatchaman (G-Force)
Published 9/8/2008 at Filmstalker
BattleofthePlanets.jpg There are a couple of clips online that are worth having a look at. Although they aren't big clips, they have some interesting moments from the films they represent. The first is from Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, a film that is touted to return him to form after the misunderstood The Fountain which received a mix reception. The second is the first Gatchaman teaser, aka G-Force. I do hope there's more to come because this is short and features next to nothing to get us excited. The Wrestler ...

For those of you who thought I was going to hum a few bars of Tony Basil's song, I'm sorry to disappoint, but Hey, if you want I guess we could do a little bit. "Hey Mickey you're so fine you blow my mind. Hey Mickey." Yeah, yeah, I know. Now you will be cussing me out all day because you have it in your head. Nothing wrong with ...

Links and Shameless Self Promotion

First, to get the self promotion out of the way, you can click here to listen to an hour long Blog Talk Radio program that I've been privileged to co-host with my good buddy Chris from his Trashcan Odorous Jr blog. We've got a good slot each week (Saturday 1-2pm central and 2-3 eastern) and we're both surprised how well the first gig came out. We spent a little more time talking about sports than film (which is our main purpose) but what the hell, it's our show. If you get past the 30 minute mark, we actually discuss film. And we had some great interaction from various people who stopped in. Very fun stuff and I look forward to show ...
