One of the more disturbing elements of the writer's strike has been the amount of free time it has given the writers to create videos that seem to be the perfect embodiment of why they need to stay behind the camera. Take this effort from the staff of The Daily Show : Sure, it's amusing, but it really goes a long way toward reminding you how much you miss Jon Stewart . You watch the whole thing and think, "Needs more Jew." Anyway, we hope everyone reaches a settlement soon. These things are starting to remind us of ransom videos.

Striking Writers Producing New Hit Series 'Not The Daily Show' In Curbside Studio [Alternative Programming Dept]
Published 11/14/2007 by Mark at Defamer
Writers for The Daily Show--for us, at least, the single biggest hole that's been blown in the TV schedule thus far--are refusing to be slowed by their temporary lack of an indoor studio, regular host, and Comedy Central-financed production values, producing a strike-altered version of the program on the streets of NY. Though the sidewalk shoot progressed smoothly enough at first, their hypervigiliant Viacom bosses eventually caught wind of the guerrilla production, and in a move designed to show how seriously the company takes the staff's unauthorized actions, dispatched CEO Philipppe Dauman (who, weirdly, decided to adopt ...

Okay so clearly, Jason Ross is no Jon Stewart. But sadly, this 4 minute ‘Not the Daily Show’ report [see above video] is as close as we’re going to get to our beloved nightly Stewart/Colbert combo for quite some time.

The Daily Show writers and John Oliver Jane Espenson posts this update on "Fan Day" Friday: ++++++UPDATE -- I'm hearing that Fan Day is now set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the main gates of Universal -- this is the series of gates into Universal that run along Lankershim Blvd. Food drive! Special guests! I'll be there. Will you?+++++++ Also, have you heard about this idea to send (mercifully unsharpened) pencils to the moguls? Of all the fan movements, this one seems to be the one that's catching fire. I like it! If I hear more about it, I'll let you ...
Goldstein on WGA Strike, week #2
Published 11/15/2007 at Hollywood Elsewhere
L.A. Times "Big Picture" columnist Patrick Goldstein "spent much of last week talking to studio executives, eager to hear a good explanation for months of one-sided negotiations, where the studios essentially presented a series of rollback offers and then bashed the writers for not embracing them. None of the studio chiefs would talk on the record, but if I were to sum up their views, I'd put it this way: The future is too uncertain for us to give anything away ." Goldstein explains that Hollywood "has always been a land of fear and anxiety. It's why the town's most-repeated maxims involve the slippery grip on the pole of ...

Daily Show Writers Present ‘Not the Daily Show’
Published 11/15/2007 by bucky at Complex
We don’t know about ya’ll, but this writer’s strike is really only affecting two nightly shows for for us, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report. If you’re still confused about the whole mess, this clip nicely sums up the writer’s position, mainly, that like Viacom, they don’t want their content syndicated online without compensation.

Getting Paid is the Name of the Game
Published 11/15/2007 by admin at GreasyGuide.com
Writers from the Daily Show put together this video to demonstrate their stance and what they really think about the writer strike. I can clearly see now that this is going to be a long fight. Who knows when this will really end. So just get ready for a whole lot of reality TV shows and less original content. Or everyone is going to abandon broadcast TV all together and watch their entertainment strictly online.

Strike Watch: '30 Rock' on stage, 'Daily Show' on the picket lines
Published 11/15/2007 by Tempo at The Watcher
Do you miss "The Daily Show"? You're not the only one. If so, here's a "Daily Show"-esque snippet from the Writers Guild picket lines in New York, featuring one of the Comedy Central show's writers and correspondent John Oliver.
There have been a ton of videos like that last week and this week, in addition to op-eds, blog posts, essays and various other discussions in recent weeks. And they appear to be working as a means of disseminating the writers side of the WGA strike. Two recent polls say that around two-thirds of the American public support the striking WGA writers.

Striking writers can't stop being funny

Writers protest on Hollywood Boulevard. Photograph: Peter Brooker/Rex Features While the effects of the strike called by the Writers Guild Of America won't be felt by most British film and TV viewers for months or years to come, fans of America's late night comedy programming are already suffering. No sooner do we get Letterman back on a UK channel than he's replaced by repeats, while the absence of fresh Daily Show material is a real blow. But comedy writers being comedy writers, they simply can't stop. Thinking up jokes is a neurosis, a compulsion, and if you can't do it for your job, then inevitably you start doing it for ...

I meant to do a fairly comprehensive strike update tonight (and I still may), but this latest from Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily really deserved its own post. Evidently, the AMPTP is having a right little temper tantrum, having been subjected to such things as parody videos and sites, fan phone calls and other indignities by those mean, mean writers. Let’s take a moment to express our sympathy: all together now, “Awwwww . . .”

MERRY LISTMAS: The 10 Best Things To Happen To The Internet Because Of The Writers Strike
Published 12/20/2007 by Alex Blagg at Best Week Ever
In the weeks that have passed since the film and television writers first went on strike, and all of my favorite TV shows started to disappear from the air (right as I finally got an HDTV nonetheless!), my evening hours have passed with an unfulfilled boredom I've only managed to escape with alternately binge drinking at holiday parties and burning through my entire DVD collection. But the one ray of entertaining light that has shined through these bleak clouds of content-less television is the massive amounts of funny stuff the bored writers have putting onto the Internet in support of their cause. I've taken the time to round up the Ten ...
