Movie Preview: Iron Man (2008)
Published 12/27/2007 by Jeanne at Film Gecko
Iron Man is set to be released in 2008 and I am really excited.  It follows the life of Tony Stark, a man who, following an accident, is forced to create a life support suit to stay alive.  Ultimately, he decides to use the technology to fight crime.  I am a sucker for comics-turned-movies, though I hated "The Hulk" and "The Fantastic Four."  I think the main problem with those movies was the acting/cast.  Before you become irate, hear me out!  I’m not saying Eric Bana, Jessica Alba or anyone else are bad actors, I’m just saying that I think ...

The trailers I saw before Cloverfield
Published 1/19/2008 by Chris at Movie Marketing Madness
So yes, I finally got around to seeing Cloverfield, getting home just a short while ago after catching a 12:45 showing at a local theater ($4 matinees and an additional $2 for a small drink/popcorn combo. Can’t go wrong.) Before launching into my thoughts on the movie, specifically the campaign now that I’ve actually seen the movie, I wanted to report on the trailers I saw in front of the movie. #1 - Semi-Pro ...

Gwyneth Paltrow Emerges From Career Hiatus, Fails To See Shadow, Returns To Her Mothering Hole [PaltrowWatch]
Published 1/30/2008 by Seth at Defamer
Having perhaps developed a new sense of perspective on What Really Matters since surviving a kale-induced gastrointestinal attack, Gwyneth Paltrow has again emerged from self-imposed career hiatus to deliver an important announcement on the current state of her always-tentative relationship to stardom. Sadly, however, the words "red-carpeted hole in my soul that no amount of baby-burping can fill" appear nowhere in the declaration, as the actress tells U.K. magazine Now that she currently has no immediate plans to return to Hollywood's ass-kissy embrace: "I don't have the same ambition that I used to have, and ...

Iron Man Gets Super Bowl Spike
Published 2/12/2008 by karina at SpoutBlog
Chris Thilk passes along word that Paramount’s Iron Man website saw its traffic spike by 800 percent after a new ad for the film was unveiled during the Super Bowl. This is interesting for two reasons. First, it would give the indication that there’s still a sizable segment of the audience that learns about movies first via TV advertising. Second: I’m so not the target audience for this movie, and I never get hardons for trailers, but the Iron Man trailer almost makes me understand what it feels like to be a 16 year-old boy ...

I must say I'm kind of tickled that they use Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" in the trailer for Jon Favreau's Robert-Downey-Jr.-starring blockbuster comic book adaptation Iron Man. It's funny, because, among other things, Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" has nothing to do with Tony Stark or any ...

Iron Man to be Sabbath-Free?
Published 4/22/2008 by Karina Longworth at SpoutBlog
Boo! The Playlist has details on the Iron Man soundtrack, and despite use of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” in various promos (see above) and intimations at last year’s ComicCon that the song would be in the film, it looks like it’s a no-go. “In fact, all the hard rockin’ songs in the trailer…are absent from the soundtrack and that’s likely cause they won’t be featured in the film,” reports the blog. There *is* a version of “Iron Man” in Iron Man, but it appears to be a cover by a composer who may or ...

Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. at “Iron Man” Rome photocall

Gwyneth Paltrow has been wearing super impractical shoes lately, to the point where she’s had to be helped to walk to her car, and I think it’s kind of awesome. I’m a flats girl myself, I have size 10 feet (1/2 size bigger than Angelina, but a full size smaller than Paris) and don’t find many heels comfortable. I have a few pairs for nice nights out, but I don’t usually wear them during the day and could never go out in heels all the time like Posh. Still, you can kind of appreciate how Paltrow is enjoying wearing ridiculous shoes. It’s her new thing and she gets a kick out it, if you’ll ...

Iron Man in cinemas this Friday
Published 4/30/2008 by Katie at The New Pink
Comic book films have come to define the box office summer season and kicking things off this weekend is a new kid on the block – Iron Man. The film stars Hollywood maverick Robert Downey Jnr. in the central role as billionaire weapons expert Tony Stark who becomes the title’s crime-fighting superhero. The actor, better known for his off-screen antics and cool, lazy charm, is an unconventional choice to carry such a big-budget, action extravaganza, but with a supporting cast of Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges and Jon Favreau (Swingers, Elf) behind the lens, the film has a strong ensemble. Iron Man marks a historical move from ...

Movie Marketing Madness: Iron Man
Published 4/30/2008 by Chris at Movie Marketing Madness
I became a fan of the Iron Man character as a consequence of my being a fan of the Avengers titles published by Marvel. I was always more interested in this collection of super-heroes who had banded together by choice in order to be more powerful collectively than they could be individually than I was to other teams that seemed to be together because of a common gene or familial connections. I liked the main Avengers title but didn’t collect it regularly. What I did make sure not to miss an issue of was West Coast Avengers, the California branch office set up by the team. That was mainly because that team was led by my favorite Marvel ...

"Iron Man" Scores With Critics
Published 5/1/2008 by Jane Boursaw at Film Gecko
The long-awaited Iron Man hits theaters this Friday, May 2, 2008. It’s already played in some parts of the country, and early reviews are good (except for The New Yorker, which always has a bug up its you-know-what about everything - Did I just say that? Yes, I did). Anyway, on Metacritic.com, the movie scored 81 out of 100 (critics) and 8.4 out of 10 (user comments), so that’s pretty good so far. More after the jump, including a trailer… The movie stars Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who’s ...

Thirty six year later its ringtone version is proving far more popular.

Iron Man Movie Review
Published 10/24/2008 by Marc Eastman at Are You Screening?
One of the trickier problems you find in superhero movies is that the whole creation vs. story question is always an issue for the script.  How much time are we going to spend working out how the superhero came to be, and how much are we going to include some actual “story” in a bigger picture sense?   The trouble with Iron Man is that it really only has the introduction piece.  It leaves out story in favor of a bit of commercial which is anti-war, or anti-weapons, or anti-something about guns and terrorists being no fun at parties, or something.   Tony Stark (Robert Downey ...
