Sad news this morning with the death of the Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack at the age of 73 after a 10-month battle with cancer. What's often forgotten about Pollack is that he was a startlingly good actor, good enough even to keep pace with an on-form, Oscar-nominated Dustin Hoffman in 1982's Tootsie , for which Pollack was also nominated for the best director Academy Award. Hoffman is said to have begged the film-maker to take the part of his long-suffering agent in the picture, and you can see why: the pair share the sort of natural screen chemistry borne of familiarity.
