Film Director Sydney Pollack Dies at 73
Gothamist — The Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack whose films include Tootsie, Out of Africa, The Way We Were and They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, died this afternoon in his Los Angeles home. The cause was cancer. Pollack grew up in Indiana and headed to New York City when he was 17, joining The Neighborhood Playhouse and studying acting under Sanford Meisner. He acted, but, according to the NY Times obituary, Burt Lancaster told him to direct, so he did, getting his start by directing television. Variety calls him a "prolific ...

The way he was: Sydney Pollack on YouTube
Film: Film blog | guardian.co.uk — Sad news this morning with the death of the Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack at the age of 73 after a 10-month battle with cancer. What's often forgotten about Pollack is that he was a startlingly good actor, good enough even to keep pace with an on-form, Oscar-nominated Dustin Hoffman in 1982's Tootsie , for which Pollack was also nominated for the best director Academy Award. Hoffman is said to have begged the film-maker to take the part of his long-suffering agent in the picture, and you can see why: the pair share the sort of natural screen chemistry borne of familiarity. It can't have hurt that they ...

Sydney Pollack, 1934-2008
PopWatch — Sydney Pollack made movies for grownups. He didn't make movies about teenager-stalking slashers or CGI monsters or men in tights (well, except for Tootsie). The director, who died yesterday at 73, seems like the last of a breed, a filmmaker who specialized in old-fashioned, star-driven, sweeping romances and ...

Popdose Contest: Win Tickets to See Maxwell!
Popdose — This one’s for the ladies. And the men who enjoy dressing up like ladies. Popdose isn’t judging one way or the other, of course, unless you’re dressing up like a lady to advance your acting career, because there’s nothing sexy about that. Funny? Yes. Oscar-worthy? Ooh, girl! But sexy? No, baby. No. After eight long years of pondering what the title of his next album would be, R&B star Maxwell returned to the charts in July with BLACKsummers’night, the first in a planned trilogy, with blackSUMMERS’night set to debut next year and ...
